Hey all,

I just changed my battery, I thought this would resolve it.

When its very very cold outside, the car doesn't start on the first push button start, unless push on the gas pedal.

Any suggestions?

When the car is warm is never acts up.

You mean it sends no signal to start or just cranks unless you add gad?

Yeah it tried to crank but then dies

But if I give it gas right after I hit the start button it starts up (this is only if its very cold )

I have the same problem on occasion. I brought my car to the dealer (still under bumper to bumper) to have them diagnosis the issue. I did show the dealer a video of the issue to the service adviser. At first it seemed like he knew the issue was but he wouldn't elaborate any further when I asked. They couldn't replicate the issue (they had the car for almost a week) but suggested the battery was to blame. They did replace that and it has only done it once since then. I am wondering if there is something draining down the battery. There is a TSB for G/Q50's with a very similar issue but this TSB doesn't apply to my car.

I have only 2 weeks left in bumper to bumper so if you do resolve the issue please post ASAP so I can have them look at it again.

I did find this thread a while back which talks about a similar issue (ended up being MAP sensor). I haven't been back to the dealer since finding this thread.

Hey Psalms, did you ever replace the MAP sensor for the starting issue? Just curious if that was the problem for you.

Hey bro, I never replaced that sensor, because it only happens when its really really cold outside, now that its a little warmers, it doesn't happen, plus while it was very cold, I just pushed on the gas right after I hit the start button and it was fine.

I figure I'd just leave it alone...

not sure if this would help you but try cleaning the throttle bodies.

my m56 used to start then the revs would drop really low when it was below -10c outside. The car never stalled but certain times it sure felt like it would stall and shut off.

After I cleaned the throttle bodies, this no longer happens even in -20c temps. the car would start then hold the revs.

Mine does this. How exactly did you clean the throttle bodies?

Also in for how to clean the throttle bodies. Are we talking about the carbon buildup on the butterfly values? Similar to this DIY for the G37?

My car also dies when the temp drops to ~32f degrees or so. I usually just goose the throttle a bit and it's OK, but it's a bit annoying.

^I would assume that it's similar to that DIY you linked to. I had a similar thing happen for the first time last week, except it wasn't too cold. Go to check the air filters and they were filthy, plus I had a low tank. So I'm going to clean out my dirty azz air filters (admittedly, I had forgotten to R&R them) but I not too worried about it.

yep cleaned my throttle bodies exactly like shown on that DIY. Some people say its not good to move the plate on an electronic throttle, but I took a chance and moved open the throttle plates by hand to clean under where the throttle plate sits. I find most of the carbon build up was around the throttle plate and it was difficult to clean without moving the plate a little by hand.

I did perform the throttle plate relearn procedure that I found in the FSM after the cleaning and have had no issues.

This completly solved my idle dip during start up in cold weather

That's the part that concerned me as I've also heard that. I used to clean my TB's on my Maxima exactly that same way, hell, a few times I even removed it from the intake manifold and cleaned it on my work bench. Good to know that after doing the re-learn, even after moving the butterfly, no issues were experienced. Might do this when it gets slightly warmer.

I just did the TB cleaning on my M56x with 75k miles on the ODO. There was so much gunk built up by the butterfly valves that there was a little "lip" formed there. I did manually move the valves open to really get at the carbon build up. I was prepared to do the throttle plate re-learn, but when I started the car up, it seemed fine, so I skipped it.

Took the car for a spin right afterwards and it really did settle down the idle. The car now idles much smoother, and engine response also feel more linear, especially in the low rev ranges.

This morning (at a "cold for Seattle" 29 degrees), the car started right up, didn't bog and die as it has been for the last few weeks. I'll see how she does in the next few cold starts.

Really happy that I did this first and not plunk down $90 for the MAP sensor. I may still have to do that in the future, but for now, I'm pretty happy with the $6 fix (for the can of cleaner)!

Mine was doing this occasionally and constantly needing to be jumped if it got really cold. I finally got tired of it and got an optima red top. She now starts with more gusto and no more stall out. I've never cleaned the throttle body, will definitely at that to my list of "quality time" tasks. Don't see how it could hurt.
