The factory flywheel had marks on it for the crank angel sensor. It has to be installed properly aligning it with the dowl in the crankshaft. If you dont do that it wont start. Or if your Aftermarket flywheel doesnt have the picup wheel on it then the ECM has no idea what cyclinder the car is on to start The injector and spark sequence. Once it does start though it uses the cam sensors to control spark and injector pulses.

You can completely unplug the crank sensor once the car is running and it will still run. It only uses the sensor during cranking to refrence TDC. After that it only uses the sensor as a missfire moniter for OBDII. Problem hee though is it wont start till it sees it. Now if you do unplug it while running It will go into a fail safe condition but hardly be noticable. Its like having a knock sensor failure type fail safe.
