is it ever too late to go to synthetic oil no matter what mileage you have? mechanics told me it wasn't a good idea. i think that they didn't want to take 5minutes out of their time to order some for me. what do u guys think?

Back in the early days of synthetics, a change late in engine life could cause leaks. As some synth blends cleaned off the residue built up over time. They also didn't have the same seal swelling properties as most dyno oils.

This has not been much of a factor in the 90's as the synths have been improved and so have most gasket/seal materials.
