Yeah, what they said. Take a rider safety class. Get a friend that rides and knows bikes to go with you. Dont get ripped off like I did with my first bike.
Also, be carefull. Bikes are extremely dangerous. Take it from me. I have totalled three of the four bikes I have owned, and wrecked one of them twice. Road rash hurts, and takes a while to heal. Broken bones hurt, and take even longer to heal. Physical therapy hurts and cost a lot of money. Especially when it wasn't your fault and the police f-you over. But at least I can predict when it is going to rain now.
Buy quality gear. A Shoei Helmet saved my face and my life. They are worth the money. Riding boots, jacket (with back/spine protection), and gloves are also a must. I dont care how hot it is outside, wear them every time!!! Again, take it from me, I didn't and have scars on top of scars because of that fact.
I started riding in 98 and after the last wreck (june '03), I will never ride again. It was very fun, but I cant justify the pain and debt. Not to mention my good friend and mentor was killed out one day on a slow ride to a friends house on the back roads because of a mechanical failure.
A suggestion on bike choices. For a first bike, I highly recommend the Suzuki SV650. Affordable, lite weight, and handles well. It is the perfect first bike, great to learn on. Not to mention it is one of the hottest bikes for the track riders.
Not trying to scare you off, but you need to be aware of this before you buy one and start riding. They will hurt you fast, and kill you faster.
