change my tensioner????

so i got my engine diagnosed by a friend he says the chain guides or the plastic tensioners are bad already since the valve makes a minor clicking noise. and i also got the same thing from a few other ppl. anyone have any threads or diy's on changing them??? my mechanic said it would be like a 400$ job since you gotta take alot apart but no way in hell im paying that, i got vacation coming up and im ready to work on it

look up timing in tutorial link in my signature. there is a tutorial on removing the upper guides to fix chain rattle. there is also a dohc guide for replacing the timing chain.
