I need to change head gasket due to over heating issue. Both coolant and oil is mixing. However, my compression readings for all cylinders come out at around 185 psi. This probably means portion of head gasket around water pump is torn.

With this great compression reading, is there a chance that the head is warped and needs to be machined? If not, I want to use the same head and same studs.

Throw a straight edge on it and try to slip a feeler gauge under it. If you can't get the gauge under it anywhere you should be good to go!

Also check to see if you have torque to spec or torque to yield studs. Torque to spec studs can be reused. Torque to yield studs should not.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot! What is straight edge? Can I use a new plastic ruler instead of this?

well a metal one would be better. But yea, I suppose that you could use a plastic ruler. It probably won't be as accurate though.

You need to use a HIGH PRECISION straight edge that's as long as the head. Don't use a metal yard stick that you can buy from a hardware store; they are far from precision.

Remember, you are measuring differences that are less then 1 mm. On a KA24 motor, the max warp limit is 0.2 mm.
