Have been reading the posts (great info for a newbie.) Talk about an education in the care and feeding of a Q45.

I am particularly interested in the chain guide issue. Is this a problem in the 1997 Q?

Thanks for the response.

Only 90-92 [some 93] Q had plastic backed guides.

The 97 and later Q41 with its smaller engine are very very different from 90-96 Q45 just as the revived 2002 Q45 shares only the same displacement, nothing else not a single part.

You just check and even if you find new style metal guides, prudent to replace the oil chain and its guide if chain has stretched [common].A stretched chain in a 93-96 doesn't seem to fail but why take the chance with it flopping around.

As I recall, no boards have had an original 1993 owner report factory installed metal guides (one owner here did, but he was not an original owner), so metal backed guides for MY 1993 were rare if ever installed and must remain conjecture and not an assumption for a prudent 1993 G50 owner.

On a pre 94 engine i think you should always check. I have a low mile engine that im transplanting but i thought i would have a quick look while it was sitting on the floor. I opened it up and was happy with how clean the engine was but the left guide had shattered and there were small pices in the sump that had fallen down... it was quite scarey

cheers guysI also pulled out the oil pump and flushed it out, no bits had got sucked up that i could see and i cut open the oil filter to check that as well. Luckily that was clean too. The last thing i checked was the cam timing which was still spot on... seems like i was lucky as there must be a huge potential for damage if the small bits get circulated through the engine.
