My everyday car is a 97 Q but I am going to be given a 92 Q with 100k on it. I would like to get the chain guides replaced so I can make this my tinker toy! What kind of price should I expect for this to be done?

dependns where you go.

The dealer book doesn't list the guide job by itself, only as part of chain replacement adding much in labor+ parts.some dealers lately have shown flexibility however and will do oly guides.

expect to see widely varying dealer quotes.

from $2000 for just guides and with aggressive pricing, to approx $4000 if they are quoting the complete chain job at book prices.

Independents will generall charge abour $1200 to $1400 including parts

Over-the-phone quote I got from T3 in Atlanta was about $1500. I'm going there soon as I can afford it this fall.

Do a search for "T3" and you'll find contact info and directions. I spoke with Doug and Dennis.

The job also involves an oil pan drop to remove the leftover plastic bits from broken guides. If you dont do that, you lose

For the $400 it costs to drive across the country to Atlanta, (assuming you can get a few days off work) I'd go with T3 over a local shop for $3000.

Tough one:

Like Jesda said, there is always T3, $1500 includes a pan drop should it prove neccessary by looking at the guides (ie. if are they not intact)

Last time I was at T3 ,the guide job (with no pan drop, which they will inists u do if guides are in pieces) was $1200, its about an 8 hour drive from Louisville and a MOTEL6 is about 50 feet from T3.

Actually I emailed you some time ago seperately:A couple of konths ago, I was chatting with Mark from Swope Infiniti service and he said there is someone looking for guide job and he was just emailing off an estimate, (since he knows I am interested in this subject) and if I wanted to help you out, and I said sure, so he gave me the email, so I could give u some general info.

I dont know if u ever got my email.

I think his estimate was $2900 and I thought by dealer standards that's pretty decent and <if> it included chains, downright impressive (I didnt ask).

BTW, which service advisor was the one you were talking to, when dealing with your recent unsatisfactory experience I know 2 out of 3 of them.

There is an independent, who did a chain job for me in 2000 in lexington, but he damaged the front cover in the process, charged me $1250, including parts. But at least at this point he has done one so far.His name is Tom and I will look for his contact info if u like.

There is a large independent import specialist in Lousville, whom I have not patronized yet, St Mathews imports, but I hear good things, you might try them also.

Also here in town, there is Dan aka forecast who has rebuilt a VH45DE before, to include installation and uninstallation and I think he is looking for some weekend work along these lines.

I won't post the mans cell phone # here, BUT if you go to forecast's NICO profile he has a link to his Q for sale website, which includes his cell #, I am sure he wouldnt mind a call from you.

if you're going to travel, you might look into vanmeter auto in mantua, nj. might be a shorter trip for you. keith vanmeter now runs his own independant shop after being an infiniti master tech for years and has done hundreds of guide jobs. he did my 90Q about 4 months ago, completely happy with his work, my Q runs great!!!! also did the water pump, oil pump, plugs, and re-sealed the valve covers. GREAT PRICE!!! let him know your a NICO member and i recommended him to you, i'm sure he'd take care of you. jeff
