chain guide question

is it possble to take off both top chain guides on a DOHC without taking the front cover off?

Yes, it is visible with the valve cover off, and that gives you a good opportuity to paint it. I suggest Duplicolor's adhesion promoter primer and Krylon fusion paint. No sanding required and excellent results.
