192 q45 i just turned 160k... guides were never done to my knowledge i purchased the car this spring with 153k... oil always mobil 1 synthetic. car is stock besides an air intake.

Last night gave it some gas getting on the highway and all was fine but then about a minute later i heard a slight squeeling/light knock and it felt really funny/weird at where i was idling about 2200 at 65mph apx. the knocking seemed to get worse so I kinda freaked and pulled over, popped the hood and it sounds like pinging/slapping valves, maybe a rod? not sure its a loud banging... idle at around 700rpm it isnt incredibly bad but as soon as you get to 1,100 rpm the sound doubles in loudness and triples probably by 1,400rpm.. it sounds terrible i almost cried as i limped home at very low rpms for 3 miles off the highway... is this the typical situation?

any guesses? timing chain guide skip a tooth?? or would have my engine been done for right away?? it starts and idles fine with a loud knocking. i guess what im asking is there a way that there wasnt any damage done and i could maybe tear it apart and re-allign the chain to the correct position/replace guides???

I feel pretty bad i didnt do the work on replacing them earlier, it was on my financial to do list but other things just kept coming up. like a cracked block on my kawasaki zx-7r... any help/input is appreciated,

Thanks!-Aaron9245

No telling without running a compression check. If it passes, new chain guides are at the top of your automotive financial priorities.

ZX-7R is nice, but I'd rather have the car in rain, highway, cold and with passengers.

if its a ticking its probably valves. sorta like someone tapping a screwdriver on the intake....

If it sounds like someone is tapping a hammer on thick metal, then its probably a rod...

Since it idles "fine" then I bet it's either a rod or piston/pin. Still, do a compression test and start tearing into it after isolating the general area with a stethoscope or piece of rubber hose against your ear (poor hick stethoscope). How do you crack a ZX-7R block? I'm guessing either nitrous or not enough antifreeze in the winter months.

Yeah, id rather have the car too, but the thing is the ZX7R is still in the shop. not even paid for yet... good luck huh??? and idk how it happened, it just did and oil was everywhere... my guess is the guy i bought it from a month earlier did it, and patched it up and waited for it to go out on me.... oh well. when i ran it earlier noise comes from both sides of the engine indicating the timings off if im correct so i think the whole rod/piston thing is out of the question, compression as far as i know is as good as it was before, but i should proceed checking into that

thanks for the input,what now?

how hard would it be to set the chain back to its original position/ replace the broken guides? ive seen all the steps to doing it, but really, is it pretty tough besides it'll take me all day?
