We have all heard the horror stories of these ceramic blades shattering at high rpm's and such..........Is there any truth to it?

I took my r33 rb25det turbo to ADP Turbo today, wich is a new/reman turbo company here near seattle. They deal with itty bitty turbos for cars all the way to turbos the size of your head for big rigs and such....anyways,,,,i was talking to them and I brought up the ceramic blade and asked if they could install a steel blade in its place...they asked why, and i told them about the whole blade shattering theory. They said that they deal with ceramic blade turbos on a regular basis and they have never seen a ceramic blade fail simply because of heat or too high rpm. they said these blades fail because of excessive shaft play which would cause the blade to contact the housing or some type of debris wich would cause a severe imbalance or physical damage to the blades....... interesting?? so are we all worried over nothing?? I personally know Zero people this has happened to ....where as i know a couple people who have ran these turbos up to 17 psi and nothing happened. of course 14+ is just blowin hot air.

Not sure, have never actually seen it happen. Alot of people will jump on the "information" bandwagon when they here something and have to pass it on. Turning one incident into hundreds. Just like people ripping on XS Power turbos. Yeah, they aren't built as well as others, but I have 2 friends running them, one at 10 psi and the other at 25 psi without problems. So I am going to give it a shot. If it breaks, you can say "I told you so." but I already have tons of money into this car and if I can save myself a few hundred dollars, I will give it a shot. On the otherhand, if it breaks, then I am 300 bucks more in the hole.

I've only ran stock here now for the longest time, and i've seen spikes to 30 before when my wastegate source popped off, and it was only for about 1-2 seconds at most, and its happened a few times while trying to hook up my HKS controller. After that happeneing about 4-5 times the shaft play is the same as when i put the engine together, its almost non existant.

I was really tempted to run 1 bar since the guy i raced with an RB20 was running 15 to 20 psi on it. I thought it was funny, i was just waiting for the turbo to shatter like madness, but it didnt. It's sure to happen here in awhile.

my brothers stock 20 turbo blew from too high of boost(16 or so psi) from my inspection though, it seemed as if the bearings went first and then the turbine made contact with the housing as the compressor had contacted as well. i believe the bearings are the cause of all of the failures as i *think* they are some type of ceramic bearing and perhaps that is the root of the problem. like i said this is just my educated guess after it happened to my brothers.
