The whole design of that center consul is just plain goofy. Our current Azera as well as the previous car had a two part storage area. Squeeze the front mounted latch, lift and the top compartment opened. Squeeze the bottom latch, lift and the bottom opened. No rocket science stuff there. In the Rogue, unless you carefully read the manual, you wouldn't have a clue that there are actually two compartments. The top box that has to be lifted out to access the bottom one, is hard unlined plastic and can be a pain to lift out. I used the power source in the lower area to power my backup sensor. 'The cord was way too long so to avoid splicing I carefully wrapped up the excess cord and held it together with tape. Then, I couldn't get the top box back in. A lot of unnecessary fooling around because of a poorly designed consul.

Most of the two layer consoles I've seen had a very shallow top layer. I like the Rogue's deep two layer design much better, never had any problems removing the top layer. IMO it is not a bad design it is just different from some others. Change is not always bad.

IIRC early model Altima's had a single compartment console/armrest. My '03 had a newer 2 compartment unit where each one could be opened seperately. The top compartment was fairly deep (3") and could fit cell phones, sunglasses etc. I miss having the 2 compartments and the whole basket idea does not work for me.

The Altima also had a seperate storage area below the HVAC controls... something else the Rogue does not have and likely caused by the new HVAC layout. Nissan opted instead for the oversize glove box.

i like how most people wouldn't know there was a second compartment. you can put things in there (ipods, etc) when you're parked so that if someone tries to smash/grab theyre not going to find much unless they know to look there.

Yeah it works well to hide stuff. Here's hoping I never have to find out how good.

My 2 layer evperience is with a RAV4 and an Accord. One thing I did not like in the RAV was that if you glasses were on top of anything the top wouldn't close. Maybe the Nissan's had a deeper top tray.
