i thought the celica gts has 180 hp but had garbage tq.

i think it would put up a good fight, but the ac should beat it.

Mostly due to the tq lead.

The GT-S is pretty darn quick, they had a video on the celica boards of one with just a intake hanging with a 98 Cobra. I never did catch whether you said the Celica is GT or GT-S, and auto or stick though...

That car MIGHT hit high 12's with a stacked turbo system, but in its current form, not a chance in hell. Take him out dude

It was on video, not a story...although I'm thinking the cobra was holding back, etc....and unfortunately, Newcelica.org is too old a forum for me to easily find the video, plus all the guys are flaming people for suggesting beating a 99+ GT, and the 98 cobra had more power than that, etc.

I don't doubt it happened, but a Celica can't do that with just an intake buddy. I'm sure he had extensive mods

a stock 2.5 vs a average tuned GTS.... the gts will win...no word about it, u can flame or dont believe me

gts is stock 180, already beats stock 2.5 in numbers + CELICAS ARE LIGHT AS ****

And he stated that the celica has headers and exhuast etc...

my brother has a GT, and those things are slow, but the GTS my buddy has, is pretty fast for 200bhp... its like driving a type r again lol light wieght ratio FTW

I agree with you, I was just hyping the kid up. Maybe the celica had a bad driver? If the guy is claiming his car will hit 12's, chances are he has no idea about cars

How about some info from somebody who's driven both?

My wife has a 2000 GT with an AEM CAI and HKS axle back (I don't think it's a cat-back, but I could be wrong. Came with the car).

Those two mods on a Manual GT get about 125 whp. 2,425 lbs

Weight to peak power ratio: 19.4

Altima Coupe 2.5 S with 15% drivetrain loss (I think the CVT loses more): 148 whp. 3,095 lbs

Weight to peak power ratio: 20.8

I'd estimate that the Celica would do high 14s with a good driver.

The 2.5s will probably be doing high 15s or low 16s.

The Celica GTs have very little torque and you can feel that when you drive them, but they move easily. That guy is comical to think his celica can do 12 second 1/4s. There are a few boosted Celis on dragtimes pushing high boost and getting mid 12s.

The main difference between the GT and GT-S is the 1zz versus 2zz engines. The 2zz has VVTL-i. Basically, it has a second cam adjustment after 6k rpms that adjusts the valve lift and duration for higher intake and exhaust flow. So the power curves for the two engines look pretty much identical until you hit 6k, then it pops into the higher power (that's where the extra 40 peak hp comes from).

VVTL-i = nothing special

Its just vtec, toyotas way. Every auto manufacture some form of it

This is true, but couple the VVTL-i with a 6 speed, close ratio gear box and now you can stay in it through most of the gears.

Wiki said toyota ditched the engine because it polluted too much for the new emission standards (basically worldwide).
