I have a 2004 G35 sedan. Previous J30 & M45 owner but this is the first time with any problems.

Wednesday I was driving down the interstate and had to merge with traffic. Had to get it on it moderately hard (4k RPMS or so) and merge into traffic. About 3 minutes later, the car made a violent jolt. It felt like it came from the transmission or engine, couldn't really tell. The CEL came on and at that point, the transmission was no longer engaged. It was still in drive but was not working. I had to pull of to the side of the road. Put it in manual and still nothing. Engine revved fine. I turned the car off, turned it back on, and it worked fine, drove into work.

Cleared the CEL on the off chance it was a fluke. Last night pulling out of a parking spot and felt a very very small jolt and the check engine light came on and the transmission was not responsive. Given that I wasn't on the interstate, I went through all the gears, and everything and still, the transmission never engaged again. Had to turn the car off and restart.

Am taking it in next week to get fixed but does anybody have ANY idea what the heck is going on with the car. It has 40022 miles on it.

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Sounds like a similar probem to what someone else just had. They had been seeing a lot of rain and had some leak down in the passenger side where the TCU/ECU are.

I had a similar circumstance with my bmw before this, but that was when the gear had crunched and I had to rebuild my transmission.

Your problem comes back after you reset everything, which makes it sound like an electrical issue. Of course, if it continues, you will likely have definite mechanical issues to go with it.

While its a little different, check out this other thread.http://forums.g35club.org/zerothread/365615

had the same thing happened to me 5mos back... a week after, whinning noise came from the transmission... ended up having the whole transmission replaced... $6500 after taxes... bring it in right away and if your'e still under warranty, get the transmission fixed...

Well, I took it in and the answer is that it was a valve body failure. It is covered under the powertrain warranty.

After looking up what a valve body does, I wonder if another problem I had sometimes was related. On occassion, when I had to get on it, the car seemed to have difficulty shifting from 1st to 2nd at around 4000-4500 rpms. It always seemed to hesitate for a second or so before second gear caught, so I am excited to see if when I get the car back if that problem is fixed.

I'm not calling you out, just informing peoples. The TCU/TCM is in the transmission, not next to the ECU.

A failure in the valve body is not uncommon if a solenoid or valve was sticking causing erratic shifting it would cause all kinds of issues depending on what had failed.

Sorry Nate the TCM is not located inside the 04 G Sedan. Many other Infinitis do have integrated control units.
