We got our 2007 Nissan Versa Hatchback a few months ago. We love it.

But I've got some questions, and I'll start off with my current headache that's led me to finally post here.

The disc is stuck...

My wife put a CD with a label in the 6 disc changer today. I read in the manual when we got the car that you shouldn't do that. I told her, but she forgot and now it's stuck in there.

The CD is loaded in slot 1. It played fine when she first put it in. The setting was on RANDOM ALL DISCS. So when after switched to another disc, she reloaded slot 1 again but it wouldn't play. She tried to eject it, but it wouldn't come out.

I looked at it when she got home. It gives a disc read error message when I try and load that disc slot. When I try to eject it, it makes all the normal noises until the moment it's supposed to appear, at which point it sort of groans lightly. It's not making any terrible sounds that scare me. All the other discs play, eject and reload just fine.

I saw this thread detailing how to take apart the dash to get to the audio deck, but I'm wondering if the changer is accessible, and if I could remove the disc manually. I'm going to at least wait until the dealership opens tomorrow and get a cost or see if it's covered under the warranty.

About seatbelts, Random disc change setting, and air conditioning

The Passenger seatbelt has a locking function when it's fully extended in order to secure a childseat in the front, even though that's pretty much illegal to do everywhere, although the manual mentions it's for just in case you have no other option So when my wife reaches for her pocketbook in the well, it extends fully, and it locks. After leaning back, and with the occasional shifting in the seat, the seatbelt eventually gets tighter and tighter until she has to rebuckle it while we're driving. Is there anyway to disable that locking mechanism?

When you've got the 6 disc player on RANDOM ALL DISCS, and you get a band or song you're not in the mood to listen to, what button skips to the next RANDOM track? The main skip button just goes to the next song on that disc. Sort of defeats the purpose of random. Any ideas?

Is it just me, or is the Air conditioning pretty pathetic compared to other cars? Is this part of some energy saving BS? When I have it on full blast, it takes a long time to cool the car.

Thanks in advance for your ideas, solutions and/or sharing similar experiences.

The AC in our SL is excellent. Cools the vehicle down in no time.

The AC in my SL works fine too, though it hasn't gotten extremely hot in Winnipeg (Canada) yet... The hottest it's been here so far is around 30C.

As for the random skip next button, there isn't. That's the way it was designed in the Versa...

I hate to tell you buddy, but that player WILL NOT be covered under warranty due to it stating in most every vehicle I know by the manufacturer NOT to use CD's with labels on them due to this problem. My mom did the same thing to her car with the 6 CD changer, and it was not covered under warranty due to them stating not to use labeled CD's, they even sent post card type notices in the mail about it too. All of her CDs also got stuck in her CD player which eventually the CD player itself stopped working all together, so I ended up taking the CD player apart and pulling all of the CDs out, but due to the close proximities inside the CD player, you more than likely will mess something up if you do ANY LITTLE thing wrong as it is integrated differently than the large scale aftermarket style changers. So either way it is a lose lose situation that you are in with that.

As for the seatbelt lock, I am sure that there is a way to disable it, but I have never heard of any body complain of it to the point that they would like to disable the feature, as it is a SAFETY feature. May I ask why you guys are pulling the belt so far out it enables the lock, because the belt has to be pulled pretty far for it to enable.

The AC on this car is pretty strong, but you also have to remember, you bought an entry level economy car . . . So . . . You get what you pay for. I have no complaints at all, my 94 Sidekick's AC sux, well I have to roll the windows down if I want the AC on and the AC in my Mustang is not very cold even on full blast, but that may be due to it needing more freon.

Other than that, I hope that you are enjoying your Versa, GL with everything!

I have always kept a small technician type thermometer, in my present and past cars, in one of the AC ducts. I noticed the temp on my V was 36 to 38 coming out of the center duct to the left of the radio. This was on a 90+ day down here on the Gulf Coast of Texas. I don't think it can get any better than that.

The only thing I have noticed is when setting still with only the electric fans for air flow through the condenser the temp is not as good as previous cars I have had.

That's about my experience as well. When I pull out from work or the gym, I tend to get stuck in traffic for a few minutes before it opens up and I notice that the a/c is pretty weak unless the car is moving. It's not really anything worth worrying about IMO, it's a little 1.8 motor and there's only so much that can reasonably be expected from it.

[/quote]I live in an area that almost demands the air conditioning be on from March through October. From may through September, it's between 95-118 degrees. The air conditioning on the Versa has so far been very good. Been over 100 for about seven or eight days now and consistently in the high 90's.

Works great.

That's what the marketeers want folks to believe so they can charge more (sometimes much more) than a product is worth. Value is not independent of price but it's by no means a direct correlation.

On my original Camel, if I pressed the steering wheel toggle up and held it till it beeped, it randomly went to the next track... I tried it today on the new Camel and it skipped CDs and took the random off... I'm puzzled... I may have to go to the dealership and visit the old Camel... :o/

It's just a blank cd that you put a cd label on (to make it look pretty). Got it now?

I'm with you on the seat belts. This car has been a little better for me, but not by much. Unless you're the ultimate in skinny it's pretty easy to pull that belt all the way out. Especially easy if you've got a adult sitting in the back.

What my parents do (and I'm not sure that it's all that safe) is buy mini clips from the hardware store. Go to the clamp section and you'll find tiny thumb sized clips, these are strong enough to hold the seat belt out. so get into the car, and pull the seat belt out just a little so it's comfortable, and clip it there. Then even if it locks up it can't pull all the way in.

I guess it's really not that safe, but I think it's a good compromise between being able to actually wear your seat belt and constantly taking it off and refastening it.

Edit: I was just thinking about the CD issue. You might be able to find something flat enough slide in there on top of the CD and press down the label so it can eject normally. Take a flash light out with so you can see in there (if possible, don't own to know for sure) and see if you can help it out.

I have an HP computer with a "LightScribe" DVD burner. It uses the drive's Laser to Label the disc with no paper required. It's not color mind you, and you do have to use special LightScribe blank CD's but it looks classier than a scribbling on the disc with a Sharpie and there's nothing to jamb up your car's 6 disc changer. Takes up to 45 minutes to burn the label and the disc is SOME HOT when it comes out of the HP drive.

I may look into one of the new ink jet printers which can print directly on CD's/DVD/'s in full color. Again, special blank CD's are required but their front surface is white to allow for good color prints.

Thx for all the comments.

So now it's gotten worse. None of the CDs will load.

Clipsed: Thx for confirming my fear. Now I'm left with two options. Replacing it, or fixing it myself. It's such a #$@% shame, we've only had the car for 4 months.

I called the dealership and the parts department told me it would be $754 to replace the deck. Which is such bull****. It'd be cheaper to replace it with something better (my next step is to search the thread on stereos that are compatible with the steering wheel controls. If anyone has a suggestion...)

I'm going to try and fix it myself now. I can't make it any worse.

I've since thrown out all of my wife's CD labels.

I think I'll ask them to check the A/C when I get it serviced next time. It was the floor model, so I guess it's possible that the freon could be low.

KimberKenobi: I'll try holding down some of the skip buttons (when or if I get the CD changer fixed.) At least if I replace it I'll find a deck that does random properly.

matttail: Thanks for getting it. My wife and I are not skinny, to put it nicely. The locking is so uncomfortable, and such an unecessary feature. Who puts a baby seat in the front!?! I'll keep the clips in mind.

thx again for the responses.

I'm off to search the board for replacement decks...

Unfortunately at this point, that would be "none". A couple brands of decks can interface with steering wheel button adapter units (basically, plugs into the back of the stereo and then gets spliced into the steering wheel controls) but the 2007 Versa is one of several cars that specifically does NOT work with this device.

Will they come out with a new version that works? Probably. In the timeframe you're looking for? Probably not.
