I have a 2000 Xterra. Radio works fine all the time but when I start the engine the CD player will not play. It will play in ACC mode though. The screen on the radio says Err after about 10 seconds. I can eject and put the disc back in but still the same. Pressing any of the buttons to fast forward, repeat, etc., don't do anything. I've cleaned it with a CD cleaner but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Doesn't matter how old or new the CD's are. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this issue?

For some reason sounds like the only difference is when motor is running it kills cd player. the only difference with motor on and off should be the current is a bit higher when running. maybe the little extra current is causing a problem with the cd electronics. never heard of this before and i was a pc tech for yrs. Sounds like ti is time to upgrade the head unit. Not worth paying for a repair as good aftermarket units are not to pricey. Not even sure who would even attempt repair on car cd. if you know how to use a meter pop radio out to where you can get to the power lines and put meter in series with positive wire and check the amperage with ign in ACC and then when truck is running and see if there is a big difference. if so you have problem with alternator or wiring if not is is in the head unit.
