Well gripe #2 about my Versa [#1 being that the check engine light comes on and goes off about once a week... and not when I get gas either, just at random moments].

This morning my cd player made this awful sound like it was tearing the CD apart. Then I put in another CD and it flashed "check CD" and spits it out try it again with a few CDs, some made on my computer, some bought from the store. Anyway, long story short, it will play a CD after you put in about 3 or 4 CDs and every so often makes that horrible sound. I have an appoint tomorrow to get it looked at but I am wondering if I should bother. I have an S so it is the single CD player and that is pretty lame. I would rather have the 6CD changer just because I want the stupid ipod jack that I assumed would be in the Versa (as it is in the 06 Sentra) but ANYWAY... anyone else have any probs?

The player is crap and even if they will let me buy the 6CD one, I am sure that is crap for $500+ when I could get something better if I just wait. I just can't understand why car companies get the crappiest stereos and charge tons of $$ for them...

Because they can, because people will buy them for that price.

it times like this it time to upgrade the cd player, but since it is under warrenty you might just want to get it fix by them. and then get a new player or wait till someone with a SL change their headunit and buys there.

Easy money is what I call it. Rarely will a company put something in a car that's remotely worth how much they are charging you. Midknight's right, it's under warranty so you shouldn't have one problem with getting it fixed. For other's, I wouldn't bother with the upgrade. You can do the aftermarket thing yourself for around the same amount. In my truck I did all Kenwood: (2) 5 1/4, (2) 6X9, motorized head unit, sirius tuner, and a sirius antenna for $450. Retail it was more like $750-$850 but I did it the ebay way.

As far as new speakers and a new headunit go, without a subwoofer or an amplifier, you could spend as little as $250 if you shop around the right way. Places like http://www.sonicelectronix.com are reliable and cheap; you can even go for a refurbished model which they supply for even less. This sort of an upgrade is perfect for people who just want a better sound in their car but are not concerned with imaging or going all out on the system. People like that, like me, end up spending at least $750+ before they consider the job done.

OEM head units are so expensive because they do not want to sell them separately. They are made in limited quantities and thus are not meant to be sold separately. I guess they figure if you really gotta have it then your going to pay through the ear. I cringe every time I have to order up a head unit for an older Honda. AM/FM/cassette for the low low price of $895.99 list.
