I have a 1994 Q45 with the factory 10 disk Sony CD changer that will not work. There is an outfit on the west coast that will repair it for $150. It's sounds like a reasonable amount, but I was wondering if anyone has replaced this changer with an aftermarket one. I've seen some advertised as low as $200, but am not certain it would fit. Obviously, I do not want to do a lot of work to replace it and would prefer finding a model that fits right in the existing shroud, bracket and electrical connector. By the way, the CD is showing an "err" code. It has done this before and by disconnecting the battery and waiting 30 seconds or so, the code disappears and the unit works fine. Not this time.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Infiniti dealer will do the repair for ~$100-$120 (check) and you will have a 12 month warranty. They will most likely send it out to Sony.

The unit can be disassembled and cleaned (very carefully) if you have the minimal skills and are careful. There is a post on it somewhere in the archives 'cause I did it.

The controller is proprietary, so most car stereo installation shops cannot check its function.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm pretty handy so I'll try the repair first. Thanks again.

Look for my post. I replaced the phillips screws that hold the bracket to the case with allen bolts (metric).

A long wood tipped cotton swab and high content alcohol should be enough to clean the lens. There is minimal amount of lubrication with silicon grease on the elevator mechanism. When the cover is off, you can hook it up to the controller and check the operation somewhat before you button it back together, mount it in its rack, and surround it with its trim.

I had the same problem back in Sept. Do a search for "CD changer replacement". I hope this helps.

Here is another solution to your CD changer woes! I'll sell you the stock 10-disc Sony CD changer out of my '91 Q45 for $50. It took it out when I installed an aftermarket sound system. Its been sitting in my room for over a year doing nothing at all. :D

Jeff...I would buy it for 50 dollars... mine broke (small internal spring) several years ago...and I know it would cost 100 bucks to get fixed...

Even Home Depot has a variety of springs.

Units that work with 1990-1993 may not work with 1994-1996 Q45s.
