Add Q45 CD Changer or add one of the new digital devices such as PhatNoise?

Hi --Newbie here--

I am looking for the entire cd changer unit and extra 6 cd magazines (i think the original unit took 6 cd magazines). I own a 1995 q45. But I gave the cd changer back to the original owner in exchange for new tires, and he had another use for the cd changer. I have since moved since buying the car and no longer have the phone number for the original owner, and prefer not to pay $400+ from an Infiniti dealer. I no longer remember who made the cd unit, I think it was Sony-and no clue as to the model number or other info. If other makes/models of cd changers can be used, any info appreciated. Should adapters/convertors be needed, that info would be appreciated. I have the original plastic connector terminal for the trunk to control and power the cd changer, but no mounting plates/screws, etc.

Also saw the PhatNoise site-a fully digital system. Any other similar devices out there?

I live a full 2 miles (max) from work and rarely drive more than a full hour per day, so spending big bucks is not an option for me.

Currently I use a portable cd player plugged into he bose stereo via a tape cassette adapter. Not the greatest, not the worst sound either.Any assistance welcome.

Thanx in advance

:thinker I know the Clarion unit is direct bolt in for 96+ models, but it does not work for the 95. The one you want is a Sony cd changer, 10 disc. Sony uses a common cd changer plug, so it should fit. If I were you, I would set up a time with a car audio shop to go and see if it works. I'm 99% sure that it will, but it is good to be sure just in case.

By the way, Sony 10 discs are not much money at a retail store.

There are several of us looking for the Sony 10 disc that plugs right into the 94/95. I even purchased one out of a pre-94, but after talking to my brother in the Car Audio business, decided it wasn't worth trying to make a "adapter/convertor" to get it into my 94. The plug is DIFFERENT for the pre 94, so they may be for the post 95. You can find your plug behind the trunk sidewall liner near the gas filler/antenna.

As of now, I'm using a Sony MD player with the cassette adapter. Not the best, but beats radio some days.

When I go home this weekend, im going to look at the changer plugs and find some changers for everybody. Rex, let me know how many people are looking and if I'll see what I can find.

I have a 94 and would be interested in one...

I also have a 90Q that could use the changer part..... i lost a spring...and can't seem to find a replacement part...it may be cheaper just to get a new one , rather than spending the moeny to get it fixed

Don't know who or how many for sure, but it seems to be a repeated topic. Another post just showed up in Ifiniti General.

Any update?

Well... I have looked in the 91 Q, and I will know soon what all of them are. I plan on talking to my guy at Infiniti today.

Ok, so here is the scoop.

The 90-93 Q45s have a 5 pin connector for the 10 disc Sony CD changer. The 94-96 have an 8 pin connector. The cd changers are all compatible with the 5 to 8 pin adaptor available for 90 bucks through Infiniti. There is a mounting bracket install kit also available for the Q's cd changer. The active suspension guys are out of luck for the "factory" install kit. The non-active suspension guys can still get the install kit for the cd changer for about 22 bucks. The cd changers are also available thru the dealer for 595. That is TOO MUCH. SO... I am going to investigate which aftermarket Sony cd changer combination will work. Also... the programming for the Sony 10 disc changers are all the same internally and the ability for them to be compatible is essentially in the connection. I have the ability to fabricate these plugs here at Purdue University in the materials engineering technology department. So either way... you will be able to get a 10 disc changer for cheap at a local store, or wherever you would buy it and i will find an inexpensive way to make it work.:ylsuper

Whoever is interested... leave a post.

So, I should be able to make the pre-94 changer I have work in my 94 by simply buying a $90 convertor?

Well, between postings here and via the Yahoo groups, I have learned quite a bit. Since my average round trip is under 10 miles, I am not willing to spend a great deal of money on a trunk mounted CD only solution. My walkman through a cassette adapter, from inside the car seems to be the best solution for me for now. I live in New Orleans. It was over 80 degrees today. If you leave cds in the trunk, they will melt.

I also realized that all of us on these boards are asking the wrong question. It is not about a $90.00 wire convertor (though I think the engineering skills required for this are to be admired). We also have cars that are 5-15 years old. Any solution should also work for any newer car that we might get to replace our beloved Q's. Most of us have mp3s and CDs. So you need a CD and MP3 player. My walkman knock-off plays both just fine. Got an ipod-yes I am a Mac user too- or other disk drive type player? Well you need a way to use that too. In brief, we all need some means of direct fully digital access to the audio system. Digital to analog via the cassette adapter just doesn't do as great of a job as fully digital. I think the current line of Q45 and M45s have CD access from the dashboard audio system itself. That does not help out us older Q45 owners though. Unless there is a reasonably easy way to get access to the Bose audio system by taking apart (instructions appreciated) the dashboard and then figuring out which wires to splice into, I do not think I can do any better.

More than happy for feedback here. Don't forget, Mardi Gras in February.

Rex, that is correct. As far as a digital "in" for the Q's soundsystem, I think I could do it. I think that I could find a way to get an iPod to work thru the cd changer integration plug. You would just have to control everything from the iPod and not the deck itself. I have an iPod and over the winter break, I believe that I could find out if this can be done, and possibly do it. I would also make sure that I could replicate the process cheaply. I have the CD changer plug schematic. I will go to town as soon as I get done with finals.

Slimmsled - Do you think something could be "crafted" that would allow me to plug my MD player in the back of the Bose HU? Even if I have to use the MD player controls.

Any update? As I'd be interested in knowing if I could create a digital input adapter versus using the cassette adapter for my MD player.

Any update on this? I would really like to find a way to splice into the existing changer wires or even craft an adapter that would let me use the CD button as an input device for my mp3 player.
