Well, last month I pulled the CD changer from my Q and disassembled/cleaned it (and removed a jammed burned CD). Worked wonderfully thereafter - for a while.

Today it stopped working again, and just gives me the "Err" message on the head unit. I've tried unplugging/reconnecting the unit, removing the cartridge and rearranging the CD's... All the CD's are out (no jammed ones), so I'm thinking it's probably history. :(

Any thoughts on last-ditch efforts to revive it? Otherwise, I'm gonna start looking for a replacement... One more DAMN thing to suck up the little bit of $$$ I've saved up.

You haven't thought of sending it to one of the Bose repair shops? Just did this with our 92 Q headunit - $150.00 and I one year warrantee. I havent yet seen a 3rd party headunit that looks good in a Q. BTW did you put in a head unit from a new Infiniti/i30? I'm assuming you have a 1st Gen, right?

Let Scottsdale service it. For a flat charge ($125?) you get a 12 month/12K mile guarantee.

This is a SONY unit? Drop it off at any of their factory service centers, They ship it to a central point, where it is rebuilt, and it is delivered to you by UPS, with the 12 month warranty.

Probably what Scottsdale (for $125), or any other dealer (at a huge markup, natch), does.

Did mine in old 91, you would not believe the list of parts they replaced, for that flat fee. They don't want you coming back within a year.

Of course, new players have new technology- but you can't install them in 10 minutes.

My Sony is giving me trouble, as well. U gues 10 years is the lifetime of Sony electronics. Not bad. I can get about 9 to 10 songs, before it starts skipping, then it stops recognizing CD's. For a long time, it would not accept the cartridge, but the little bar that moves down had bent, over the years, and I put a little positive upward pressure on it, and it now accepts the cartridges.

I have found someone who will sell me one out of a junked Q, for $300 (yea, right!).

I am looking for a head unit like in my 2000. It has the CD and cassette in the dash, with a Clarion 6 disc changer in the trunk. I just don't want to rewire the car.

What kind of cleaner did you use. I plan to make a trip to the electronics store, for some, and od a disaddembly this weekend.

If you go that route you can buy the female and male wiring adaptors that will plug into your existing harness and then into the new head unit. Should take about 30 minutes with a soldering iron and heat shrink tubing. I'd try to make sure the line-level output from the newer head unit is the same as what your existing head unit puts out, so you don't have distortion problems.

If you pull your changer out to get the serial and model number, you can go to the Sony website and request service. Here's what they told me when I did mine (3 months ago).

Ship to:Sony Service Center 37768 Hills Tech Drive Farmington Hills, MI 48331

The cost to repair this unit under our Flat Rate Program is $119.75 (plus any applicable taxes). Return shipping is included in this price.

This pricing is only valid at Sony owned service locations.

Based upon the information you entered, your unit appears to qualify for the Flat Rate pricing quoted above. Flat Rate pricing does not apply to non-consumer products, units requiring replacement of picture tubes or projection TV tubes, any condition resulting from physical abuse, misuse, or excessive wear, units older than seven (7) years from last market date or damage resulting from prior service. If, upon examination, it is determined that your unit does not qualify for Flat Rate pricing, then a parts and labor repair quote will be given to you and a $26.00 diagnostic fee will be charged. If you accept the repair quote, the $26.00 diagnostic fee will be applied to your final repair charge.

A bit off topic but...Geoff, how do you like your 95 compared to your 93? I already know of what the technical/specification differences are but how do they compare back to back? I'm beginning to think about getting another Q (we have a 92) and was wondering if you think your 95 is noticably better than your 93. BTW I think dark metalic purple is nicest Q color!

I replaced my 93 mainly due to timing chain guide scare. My 93 needed the plastic chain guides replaced (car at 107k), oil pan leak ($1400!) tension rods, window switch fuses, etc. I also wanted a touring model, though little difference in 95 except wing and rear stabilizers. The 94 touring was the last year for HICAS 4-wheel steering which added a little. The 1st few production 94 Qs may still use plastic chain guides. You would have to check prod date and make sure it was a late one. 95 Qs have a little better transmission cooling, but an add on cooler is still recommended. 93 is a little quicker, but hardly noticeable. 93 aslo has more responsive steering and that is what I miss the most! I like the updated stereo, climate ctrl, A-pillar tweeters, auto day/nite mirror, armrest, seats, grill, driving lights. So overall I like the 95 better and will take better care of it.

Interesting. I liked the 93 I used to own better overall. It handled better (less isolation), and it seemed quicker, but I haven't had my 95 to the dragstrip to confirm that. The interior on the 93 was a lot nicer too. The seats were more supportive and comfortable, Infiniti used leather everywhere rather than a leather/vinyl combo and the quality of the leather they used in 93 was far superior to that used in 95. I do like the stock stereo on the 95 better though and not having to wonder if my 93 was one of the lucky ones with the new guides is nice. Both are great cars, but I'd rather have a 93 (with new guides). 93s were the best of the breed IMO. You get the first gear start, firmer suspension, better interior and possibly newer guides. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to find a good example now. I found several with 150K miles, or service histories indicating abuse (one had been brought into a dealer for a knocking sound. It turned out to be 4 quarts low on oil), or cars covered with door dings, scratches or terrible interiors when I looked for one about a year and a half ago. I looked for many months, and couldn't find one in good shape with relatively low miles so I ended up buying a 95 in nice condition instead.

If anybody is looking for a 95, mine will probably for sale in the next couple of months. I've got 2 small children in car seats, and I am probably going to get some kind of bigger family hauler to replace it. I'd miss it greatly, but really need more room for car seats/strollers/toys/etc/etc.

Bought the Nissan CD player online special from Nissanwholesaleparts.com yesterday (7/24) and plugged it into the connector in the trunk next to the antenna motor. Worked fine using the radio console. This is in a 94 Q45 with Bose audio system. Need to go back and get the mounting hardware as it wasn't in the box (I'm in Dallas and the son who drives the Q bought on line and then drove over to save the shipping $$ and time). The online price is shown as $119. Didn't need the massive cable harness that comes with the unit.

It is the 6 disc changer. Check their ad on the NICO home page, middle of the screen, not the left edge. The details indicate it doesn't work w/BOSE but the same model on the a Nissan site (my son did the research) said it would work, and it did with mine.

Wow. Assuming that's a Clarion unit, I paid a lot more for the same one from another online parts place a little over a year ago. The mounting bracket and matching trunk trim piece were seperate items IIRC.
