Have heard they give great flow at the expense of engine longevity i.e. inferior filtration...make your own judgement. I'm sticking with O.E.M. Sometimes the aftermarket filter elements are fine, but the flange doesn't fit as well around the lip of the breather box. I lightly coat the lip with silicone grease when I replace mine, of course after cleaning the filter housing.

P.S. make sure your filter housing clips still have good tension...doesn't matter how good your filter element is if the air is getting past the flanges!

K&N filter cause a whole hell lot of driveability issues, WHEN THEY ARE NOT CLEANED PROPERLY ON A REGULAR BASIS.

I was just experiencing some lag and didnt even think of my filter, I cleaned her up nice and voila FULL POWER once again.

Very interesting, thanks for the post.

I had never considered the possibility of K&N filters letting more dirt through, but it's tough to argue with hard data from a controlled test like that. Makes me think twice about switching.

I blow compressed air from the inside filter out. It helps with the cleaning. I use the K&N recharging kit, but conservatively and I always let the filter dry out properly before re-installing it.

The key to a K&N filter is keeping it clean.

It's supposed to be cleaned every 50k, right?

I clean and 'recharge' mine every spring regardless of service interval. I think my K&N filter is 7 or 8 years old now.

That's good to know. I bought mine in the Fall. I guess I should take a look at it and see if it needs to be cleaned.

I would defenitely try to clean it every 10k at least. Every two oil changes would be good.

I had my K&N filter kit until it destroyed my mass air flow sensor. Apparently there is a possible class action lawsuit by people for the potential damage to these sensitive filters. The oil will be heated to the point of damage to the MAF sensor....

The filter sits in my house and the repair was over 350 dllrs...

That's exactly why, when 'recharging' the K&N air filter, the recharging oil should be used conservatively and the K&N air filter should only be installed when completely dry back in the vehicle. Typically, my J30 is out of commission for a couple of days, since I want to make sure the filter is totally dry before installing and driving.
