cat has around 150k. ka24e engine has 20k. there is an injen intake and wider than stock cheapo cat back exhaust. will be installing headers. how does one know whether to replace the cat. should the car stink of rotting possum first or is it a reasonable precautionary measure to replace it. would it be more sensible to purchase a sensor tester and check it.

heres what im considering

if you are still passing emmisions, dont wory about it. if you fail, then its time to consider a new cat.

best way to check cat efficency is on a 5 gas analyzer(smog machine) There are three ways of doing it but the best way is with an intrusive test inthe exhuast. You first take a reading at the tail pipe at a predetermined RPM {and speed if on a dyno} after you log your CO,HC,and NOx readings. then you shut it down quickly drill a small hole in the exhuast pipe right in front of the cat, change the probe on the analyzer to the intrusive probe, stick it in the hole and bring the car back to the predetermined RPM/Speed let it stabalize and record your numbers again. You take those numbers and compare them. The Cat(s) should reduce your readings substantially from what is going in to it. There are minimum numbers that apply here but it would just be confusing as it depends on how efficent the combustion process is. If you have a clean burning engine the cat(s) dont have much work to do. So numbers could be well below what the cat should and can do worst case. You just really want to see a significant drop in the numbers whats going in to the cat to whats coming out of the cat.

ok none of thats happening so i figure $56 and some elbow grease = peace of mind and slightly better air flow.

i have the distinct impression the previous engine literally was a smog machine

Ask AZHitman. He has hookups for the carsound high flow cat convertor. He can make it so it bolts up. I just ordered mine for $155 shipped to my door. I haven't installed it yet, but it looks like it should fit :).
