Catalytic Converter

Hello, My fellow 240 drivers. My car has been sitting since Novemeber because I couldn't pass my Smog Check. I don't know what the hell is wrong with it.I took it to a Mechanic(so-called) and I ended up wasting $1000 on my car,This is what he changed: all 4 Shocks(used), all 4 brakes, and one hose. But nothing pertaining to the smog problem which was the reason I took it to him.Do you guys think that was a fair price? he bought the parts so I don't know, becuase if he ripped me off I will get my money back. And that's what f***ing sucks about being car-retarted. Now hes telling me I need to change my catalytic converter, I said f*** that. So i'm thinking of doing it myself, can anyone give me a little advice? help? How much would it cost if I get it at a shop? My car also has the engine check light on and I don't know why and suprisingly neither did "mr. mechanic" he said he would have to break down the car to find out(which obiously would cost me $$$$). So I'M kinda in a ditch here, I can't pass the smog unless I go change the catalityc converter to pass the smog, and somehow turn off that light(which I'M contemplating breaking). I'M about ready to give up on my ol' 240 which I would hate to do. Any help??? it is highly needed and greatly appreciated.

there is a tutorial on catalytic converter install in tutorials in my signature. you will need a propane torch to heat bolts. use mapp gas . yellow bottle
