cats are getting expensive especially at the dealership because of a shortage of platinum (thanks Nelly...). you'd be better off with a high-flow. cheapest i seen was $99 w/o flanges but a muffler shop can fix that.
dont listen to this guy. cats do go bad. when raw fuel or leaded fuel is introduced, it gets clooged. to test for this, you must vacuum test it. hook up a vacuum gauge to anywhere on teh manifold, and rev engine up to approx 3000rpm, the vacuum should stay steady. if it drops sowly, you have a clogged converter. best place for a converter is the dealer. aftermarkets tend to flow better but not be as efficient. and with newer cars with a post-cat o2, a catalyst efficiency code will pop up.
