Last Friday while my wife was parked at a park & ride someone crawled under my 95 Infiniti Q45 & stole the passenger side catalytic converter. Really pissed me off (excuse the french) because they used a saw cut it off unstead of unbolting it. To top it off the insurance compamy (Safeco) would only replace it with a generic converter, and wouldn't pay for a new down pipe. I ended up having to put on a generic converter because I was unwilling to pay the $1200 for it to be done right. It ended up costing them $300 plus $100 deductible. I've got a call into my insurance agent to see if there is any kind of manufacturers replacement policy and what it would cost. I'm also going to ask him what he would have done if it was a two year old Infiniti vs. 12 years old. Has anyone else ever had this experience? Okay now I vented so I'll feel better for a while.

Common. There are several valuable metals in cats. The foremost of which being platinum IIRC.

I guess one of the unintended benefits of being low is that they can't fit under the car lol.

Seriously, that sucks ballz. I heard about this and thought, no way, but here's proof. Unreal.

"Catalytic converters contain expensive precious metals like platinum - which is worth up to $1,200 an ounce; palladium, which can fetch $320 an ounce and rhodium, the biggest prize of all. It goes for up to $6,000 an ounce on the market."

Neither are properly functioning converters "gunked up".

Personally, I would not accept Safeco's solution. Aftermarket are nowhere the quality. And they have to include any damaged parts, including the downpipe.

If there is that much valuable metal in them why can we buy them for a few hundred bucks? Maybe we should start buying them and taking them straight to the metal salvage guy!

That is where logic pwns you sir. The reason why this is such a common problem is that it takes many many many many many manyx291087430932097849238 cats to harvest the amount to make profit.

The metals are still recyclable though.I think they should have somewhere to take them and recycle the metals.

Some people simply steal the cats for their own car.

Maybe in a few cases. I replace a half dozen cats a month. Our salvage guy gives me 40 to 60 dollars a piece depending on the condition. Actually the junk guys are always competeing with each other. There is a lot of money to be made. I make $2000 to $3000 a year on junk cats, go figure! There was a local dealer who got hit and they took every cat on every car! :And yes, low is good!

A system like this could be rigged up to be set off when the alarm is activated, instead of a siren.

The early 90-93 Q cats were so well made [thick exotic layers] that they have an almost unlimited life.................not sure the Meth addicts understand this yet....................maybe they do.

T3 Decatur recently got attacked and 4 sets of cats cut out

There's one simple solution ... they can't steal what you don't have.

How desperate are people? Stealing used cats off of a running car??? (Maybe....maybe from a salvage yard or a broken car.) That's disgusting.
