Here is the thing guys:

I have an s14 with an RB25DET and the car smells horrible. Every time someone follows me, I'm told the exhaust reaks. I've about had it with the smell myself. Questions:

1. Is there any particular cat made for RB25DET, or cars that run a bit rich?2. How long will the cat last if the car runs rich?

Thanks in advance

*I know the hp might drop - I can live with it on the streets, and if i need to i'll swap a test pipe for the track days.*

RB's don't "run rich" and need a special cat to make up for it. Yours just isn't running right.

Nope, just get a 3" hi-flow cat (13" overall length is the closest I could find to being the exact length) + order 2 flanges.

According to http://www.frsport.com/Megan-R....html that bolt-on claims it's approx. 12.25"

I have a resonated test pipe right now, and Im about to have a carsound (magnaflow) 3" hi-flow cat welded/flanged in after my dyno. I'm tired of the fumes too, like if the wind blows a certain way, or at idle.

If your narrow band 02 sensor is working, you shouldn't be running stupid rich except at WOT just because the factory tune is super "safe" (read sucks).

Also, I have no narrow band, cams, and 850cc injectors, and my car doesn't smell like "fumes" at idle or daily driving. It's because my tuner tuned it that way.

While I agree running a cat/not running a cat doesn't make much difference in power (especially below say 400rwhp), the guy spouting off most of the "knowledge" in that thread has not clue how exhausts work.

O, and if anybody is thinking about running the "torque control" cat, please wait for me to get back to the states so I can punch you in the face, then you can buy it. Backpressure is ALWAYS bad for power, both low end and high end power. People confuse this all the time. Running way too large of exhaust pipes (that also have very little back pressure) kills exhaust gas velocity and there by low end torque. Having the correct size pipe for your power application with it being as smooth and straight as possible keeps exhaust gas velocity up and increases scavenging in the cylinders. The air going out the pipes helps pull the air behind it out of the cylinders in effect making more power. You can't just get a 5'' exhaust pipe, and put a restrictor in it to create backpressure for better low end. You'll have really slow exhaust gas velocity WITH a lot of back pressure. Worst of both worlds, and that's what the torque control cat bulls*** does. You know why they sell that? Because people buy it. BTW, all of that is in relation to N/A cars anyways. Turbo cars, bottom line, the bigger the better immediately after the turbine wheel. Sorry, [/endrant]

i run a cat simply because I like to breath cleaner air.

Agreed! I had to sit in traffic today and breath that nasty exhaust. Thank you: Cjmartz2k, Neejay, gp_says, imotion s14. Your input really shed some knowledge, and i've made my decision. I'll definitely get a cat, today was the last time i'm breathing that crap.

*Sorry about the response time - to your posts. I've been tackled at work and had to rebuild the alternator this weekend. Thanks again guys.

Good news! Got the catalytic converter today. Car sounds quiet and the exhaust smell is non existent. I had a downpipe leak - bolts were not tightened down - which definitely contributed to the smell.

NEW PROBLEM - once the mechanic tightened down the downpipe bolts and put in a missing bolt - the steering column bolt rubs against the downpipe.....anyone know how this can be fixed????

Thanks in advance.

s***, i really feel bad for my car, but that might be the solution if nothing else works. I was thinking of using a file to rub that bolt a little - the clearance is there, but the bolt is slightly touching the manifold. My car has been to the clutch shop for days, then i had to change the alternator (without lifting the car and taking the radiator out - what a b****), recharge the battery, put in new infinity speakers, now got a catalytic converter. This thing has been sitting around for about 2 weeks - I WANT TO DRIVE THE DAMN THING!!!!

Even after i'm done fixing the b**** - i have to break in the f***ing clutch!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!

HAHAHA. I know someone who just joined the NRRBA the other night - shifty stuff. I'm just gonna drive the itch till the bolt gets sanded by the manifold

LOL, might want to brush up on forum etiquette, but just go to your local muffler shop and they will point you in the right direction. And yes, magnaflow is a good name brand. Also look and random flow technologies.
