So I brought my 01 QX4 with 144k miles in to replace the 2 converters attached to the exhaust manifold. Apparently the bolts attaching them are rusted and can't be moved. A job that was going to be $1,600 jumped to over $2,500 because they say they need to replace both exhaust manifolds. Does this sound right? The converters were aftermarkets.

exhaust bolts usually rust solid and are difficult to remove. difficult but not impossible. If they tried to drill or torch or grind the bolts while the manifold\converter assembly was still on the vehicle it would have been very difficult. if they tried while the assembly was on a bench it would have been easier. My guess is they were lazy or unqualified to extract broken bolts or maybe just a it was just a money grab. It also depends on the cost of new manifolds vs. the cost of labor to seperate the coverters from them.

Tell them to pack it up and take it to a muffler shop.

Should be alot cheaper.

Man i just paid 550 for exhaust manifolds, cats, and the rest of the exhaust all the way out the back. That is just for parts but damn labor shouldnt be 1100 dollars. Then again i bought everything off of ebay and im doing the work myself.

mott6904: nice doberman heres mine

but back on the topic, well i had to replace my exhaust manifold a few months ago and i had to take my cat out because my manifold broke in half, i bought one at Napa for, i think it was like 60-65 dollars, it was pretty cheap, the only reason i did mine myself was because it was my passanger side manifold, if it would have been my other side i would have had take it to a shop, because they'd have to tear the whole engine apart to get to it, that amount does seem a bit pricey if you can, take it to other shops, shop around. or if you dont have emissions law, just take it to someone that would just get rid of them. but here is what happened to me.

broke while i was driving

when i got it all out

with the cat out

WTF i just now figured out this is an old thread, y would you bring this back mott

the doberman is the most loyal dog ive owned.

I was searching around looking for info on the exhaust manifold to catalytic converter gasket and saw what he was getting charged. I didnt even look at the date...oh well who cares.....
