Probably means your cat has failed (internal components) and now needs to be changed. Fuel must be rough in your area? Bang on it with your hand and you'll probably hear it rattle. If one goes you might as well change both. It's common for these things to be the first thing cut out of the car when it arrives to a junkyard so tough finding used.

Or just a rusted broken attachment cat heat shield vibrating from a roughly idling engine?

What does your under retainer Certified Technican say?

These old vehicles need 90 day inspections with each scheduled oil change.

Thats a good possibility. I ripped off and discarded my heat sheilds so long ago, I forgot they existed!

The heat shields for the exhaust system on my car were rattling pretty bad. It was a little embarrassing to think I would let a 50K car go to such a waste. Anyways I took some Viton o-rings (Harbor Freight Tools). I sprayed the nut and stud with PB Blaster and let it sit for a while (The longer the better). Then I loosened the nuts that hold the exhaust shields to the car just enough AND CAREFULLY ENOUGH to slip in the Viton o-ring. Using silicone grease or other rubber safe lube will help the process. You need a pick or two to get the o-ring over the nut. Then tighten the nut back up CAREFULLY and Enjoy the silence! I can't stress enough that you should be careful loosing the nut that holds the exhaust heat shield in place. If you break the stud it wouldn't be fun fixing it!

And I am no engineer but I think heat shields were put on a car to prevent the heat of the exhaust from burning the paint off the under body there by causing the car to rust out at a faster rate.

Holy crap, that's the resurrection of the year!!! 6 years?!?!

Anyway those Viton orings have a resistance of only about 400 degrees don't they? That shouldn't stand up too long with the heat the cats can put out, anywhere from 600-1100 degrees. How long has this solution lasted you guy?
