Been running my new Q very nicely lately because im broke and gas sucks. But i/v noticed that my exhaust pops very loudly when its cooling down after a drive. I hit the cats with a lazer temp gague and i got 1677 deg on the left and 1200 on the right!! I dont know about you but that seem alittle hot!! The rest of my system was aroung 300. I checked with the dealership and he said dont worry. cats sometimes go up to 3000 deg!!! I think he was just trying toget me off th phone. I'm thinking they are starting to get pluged because im getting crappy millege. 11-13. backroads. but the car passed smog. Does what i saying make sence or am i just parinoid about my new car? Thanks for all the help.

11-13 mpg? Hope you're not using regular. What's your driving style? Lots of quick acceleration? When I drove my Grand Cherokee, I could visibly watch the gas needle drop as I punched it at lights.

I don't know about cat temps. But damn, that's hot.

How's the car run otherwise? Laggy? Rough idle? Smoke?

the car runs smooth. No smoke or anything. It dosent feel like it revs as quick as my 91, but i had a full system with magnaflow CAT's. Premium, with octain booster every other fill up. The #8 injector sounds a little different under the stethescope, but i dont think thats anything. as for the sencers, i have no idea. only had the car about 3 weeks. got it from a dealership who did the normal saftey check. I went through and took every censer of i could get to one at a time and cleaned every one of them. Everything looked good. Just that exhaust poping is bugging me. How loud does yours pop? At all?

Palladium melts at 2830FPlatinium at 3215F

"The average light off temperature at which the catalytic converter begins to function ranges from 400 to 600 degrees F. The normal operating temperature can range up to 1,200 to 1,600 degrees F. But as the amount of pollutants in the exhaust go up, so does the converter's operating temperature. If the temperature gets up around 2,000 degrees F or higher, several things happen. The aluminum oxide honeycomb begins to degrade and weaken. The platinum and palladium coating on the honeycomb also starts to melt and sink into the ceramic substrate reducing its effect on the exhaust."

So these are non-OEM after market catalytic converters?

Going by what Dennis says, the temps that youngQ45r reported are ok. At least that's what I understood.
