Well I found the source of my exhaust rattle. Broken welds on the heat shield mounting bracket. I am in danger of doing damage to components by leaving the shield off for a while until I can get it welded back up?

No, there's nothing important up there, your cabin will probably be a bit hotter though. Go learn to weld, it's a wonderful skill.
