I went to smog my 93Q45a with 153k and it's not passing. The mechanic said the first step would be is to replace the cat converter. How many do we have on the Q??I'm not sure this a related problem but my car lacks power on an incline, ie. highway on/off ramp that has an incline. The would move at that point if I floor it.Can the cat converter have an effect on that problem??Besides that car runs great.

How much are the cats??If so where can I get them??

Thanks~~

You have two pre-cats (the grapefruit sized things right behind the O2 sensors that are integrated into the exhaust manifolds) - they're for cold emissions control. Then two cats behind that. The next two units are mufflers, followed by the resonator at the very back.

They're really expensive I'd think. I'd take it to someone who knows what they're doing with Consult. You may have clogged EGR passages, need a plenum cleaning, sluggish O2 sensors, etc. You might post the values as far as what's out of spec. - other members (especially Q45Tech) will have a better idea of what what could cause the problem.

Heath,

Thanks for the info. You're right with the above mentioned problems.Where should I start??I guess from the cheapest to the most expensive.Isn't it odd where the car lacks in power on a slight incline besides that, the engine runs strong.

The cheapest route is to post the various emission readings and the test rpm as each fault has its own indicator.

If you have power problems your emissions problems are likely rooted elsewhere.

MAF/MAf connector, ox sensors..

While I agree with Fred, I would start at the EGR valve, as I bet it needs cleaning on the plenum end.

Time for a trip to a qualified expert with Q45 experience before you sink a lot of money into parts which may or may not fix the problem.

"Replace the cats" is the generic fix for every car that fails emissions.

The cats have nothing or very little to do with Nox reading!
