So I am really anxious about getting my y-pipe but i'm curious exactly what this replaces in my exhaust system and how it would fit with an aftermarket catback exhaust.

I honestly have no idea how it is set up stock, so if anyone could break down the flow under the car for me that'd be great. (i.e. 2 pipes come from engine, into 2 cats, than converges to 1 cat and into the muffler, this is how i imagine the system right now but thats just my totally uneducated assumption)

And based on the stock flow, which of those parts get replaced by 1) y-pipe and 2) catback exhaust (preferably nismo/greddy, if they even differ). I am wondering this because in a few months I will have both of these and want to know if i'm going to have any cats left LOL, i really dont want just open pipes all the way back, thats just way too loud for me.

Right before the Y-Pipe there are two cats and the stock Y-Pipe will have another cat, totaling to 3. After replacing the Y-Pipe with racingline's, you'll still have the other two cats.

so the cat-back exhaust systems do not replace any cats? (this may sound stupid to some but i'm a big noob when it comes to this kind of stuff so bare with me lol)

Correct, a cat-back refers to the piping after the catalytic converter of the downpipe (y-pipe same thing; specifically for us). There's no cats on a cat-back.

Check out this link. http://www.trademotion.com/par...gid=2That should help you understand. I believe that the portion label #6 is what the Y pipe would replace.

not that i know of..... the 2.5s has an inline 4 cylinder engine... so think of it as 4 cylinders lined up and each one has a pipe going out and the 4 pipes go into 1 (that would be the headers) and then you should just have 1 pipe all the way to the muffler.... the 3.5se has a V6 so it would have 3 into 1 headers on each side so it will have 2 headers and then the 2 pipes will go into 1 in the shape of a "Y" and it goes 1 single pipe to the muffler..... do you kind of see what i'm saying?
