The debate has come to an end. The following text is from a news broadcast that aired on Sunday August 2, 2009.
The debate continues whether to extend the cash for clunkers program but already some dealers report sales up 50% from a month ago. Local dealers say its been a year since they've seen this much activity. To put it in car lingo, cash for clunkers has shot sales from zero to 60.
"Last month was the first time that we had come close to matching month to month for prior year numbers," said Tim Hensley, Jackie Cooper Nissan..
"If they get the other $2 billion it'll be good till the middle of next week, not November 1st, not August the 15th, that's how many cars we sell," said Henry Primeaux, Primeaux Kia.
Despite the success there's concern that politics will slam on the brakes.
"I've talked to both senators offices today. Senator Coburn sent an aide over, I spent an hour with him. I think that both of them may vote against the bill in the senate, I hope not," said Primeaux.
What's more ironic than a government program that actually works in jeopardy of being axed by the government? One aimed at improving the environment be reducing waste.
"Here's my clunkers, there they are," said Primeaux.
And dealers are legally required to destroy every last one of them.
"These are perfectly good cars, in an auction, in a poor person auction. You have to? I have to do that with everyone of these vehicles. It's a $15,000 fine if we don't do it," said Primeaux.
We've got a chemical solution that we drain the oil, replace the oil with the chemical and then actually run the engine for about 7 minutes and it'll lock up in the process," said Hensley.
"I'll bet you there's a church in town that would love any one of these cars and I'll give 'em away if we can get Washington to let us do that," said Primeaux. While the house has voted to pump in an additional $2 billion, the senate still has to vote on the matter. That could take place as soon as Sunday.

Mr. Primeaux, though thrilled about the surge of new cars sales at his Kia dealership admitted the “Cash For Clunkers” program has more than a few faults.
In this NewsChannel8 video, Primeaux also had some very interesting things to say about our elected officials in Washingtion.
Ron Paul is right!
