heres a pic out of the FSM for the s14 cas....

Here is what my markings look like in my red top...

Notice how the one farthest is on the left on the redtop and the closer one is on the right? Well its completely backwards in the S14 FSM....(ie the farther one is on the right and closer on is on the left...) is the pic just backwards? Are u supposed to line up with the one to the right or left? or the closer one or farther?Right now mine is lined up closely with the left on which would be farther even tho the FSM shows the closer one being lined up when the gears are in....so is mine a tooth off? or is it lined up correctly....when i check the timing we set it to 16deg last and it tends to run sluggish and hot.....b4 i accidentally had the timing on like 35-40deg advanced (idle was at 2000 so it was off when i set it to 16 by alot :) ) and the thing ran fast as hell and the EGTs were extremely low....like they should be......was that the correct timing? it sure felt like it....but i dont wanna find out the hard way and melt a piston with too much timing.....just wondering if the timing setting process gets messed up at all....cause ive seen other people in the same boat .....cars running like **** at 16 deg and running awesome at 40......what the hell is goin on? :help

I'm in a similair boat. I followed the FSM exactly and set it to 15 and by itself it jumps to 40 while I'm looking right at it holding the CAS?!? Car seems to run beautiful and pull like a mo'fo but will sometimes idle around 1000. You think it's my knock sensor? I given up tryig to change my temp sensor cause it seems to be rounded off. I tried a 19mm deep socket cause it's the only thing that gets past the connector part.

Just changed my water temp sensor today, you need a deep socket and to take off the small coolant hose to the left of the sensor. the idle you can adjust through the IACV between the 2nd and 3rd runners.

well as far as the markings go i have an s13 redtop and i set the crank pulley to the 2nd one from the left(like in your pic) then pull the CAS and position it to line up to the dot on the right, then with a little jiggling push it back in and it automatically pops itself into the mark on the left. seems to work fine for me, but i haven't started the car yet so ill let you know how it RUNS ;)

180fan: What size deep socket? 19mm? I didn't take the coolant hose off but I swore I got on it and it just spun like it was rounded off. I'll try again.

Dunno what size but yeah I think it was like 3 inches total length dunno bout the depth of the inside. Yeah I thought I had it on too, but I took off the connecters for the coolant temp sensor, the plug on the right of it, and the coolant hose on the left. Then it finally got a grip on the sensor. When I put the hose back on, I used a mixing syringe for motorcycles to dump a bit more coolant into the hose so there wouldn't be as big a air bubble in the system. Hope that helps.

You have to be very careful what timing light you use to time you SR/RB as MOST adjustable lights will give you the WRONG reading as the coil packs interfear with the light operation.. Use a OLD non adajustable light for the best results....

if you did it the CAS way with the second notch on the left... then what do u still need the timing light for?

easy. it's better safe than to be sorry. oh and use the diagnostic loop at the back of the coilpack harness. it's a bit more accurate than getting them directly from the coilpacks.

93 niss did you fix your problem?? when i get closer to 15deg and leave it it jumps to like 40 and runs better. I have a redtop sr and my CAS looks like the s14 one.

I used the 1st coil pack to set my timing, what loop are you talking about?? all the wires that are bunched up

I repeat. If it jumps when you leave it the car is not in timing mode.

do you think it can be the CAS or timing chain
