Trying to adjust the CAS< already adjusted TPS. Ignition was advanced since I bought the car. Set it up right with spark plug wire and brass wire. Car was warm and tps disconnected. Everything was going well but when I would get close to having it at 15 degrees (second mark from right) it would jump up or down, whichever way I was adjusting. Did it multiple times and sometimes it looked like the 6 marks were oscillating back and forth. Would this mean bad CAS? I can't think of anything else that would do this.

I was hoping to avoid popping off the valve cover but I guess I'll do it the right way.

That way is a whole lot easier and less time consuming than the other proper ways to do it.

For sure, but still have you heard about the CAS jumping like that? I would have it so close to 15 and it would go way up or down.

Do you have the cover on it? If the wheel is warped, it'll act nuts...

Yeah, cover is on it, I'll check it. This car also had a wacky tps that did the same thing and wouldn't adjust right. I have a spare CAS just in case.

Another thing to try is disconnecting the ecu and reconnecting it. MAKE SURE IT'S STRAIGHT THE ENTIRE TIME

ECU and harness are tight and 100% good, just got a replacement in last month. Been straightening lots of things out on the car since I got it and this timing should be the last of it (knock on wood).

I wasn't saying your ECU was bad.. Just that you may have tightened it with an angle..

Got it adjusted without taking off cover, we'll see if it stays there. I plan to take off the valve cover to see what's in there, just don't want to do it now.

If your cas is not centered, its not installed correctly.

Yeah I know, it's just temporary. I'll do it right soon but didn't want the car down. I've spent so much time on the car lately and so much more to do so I'm putting it off for a while. I've had the car for a year and plan to sell it soon as it's my second s13. Bought it swapped and it was a weird mix of quality parts and half-assery, and was running crappy. It's come a long way since then and is a pretty respectable s13 at this point.

Not to revive an old topic, but I didn't see a solution posted and wanted to share my experience with this issue. I was having issues with setting my timing. I verified the timing on the crank, but could never get the timing to stay steady. I chased around boost leaks, vacuum leaks, fuel pressure, IACV, ignition, etc. I decided to inspect the CAS.

The little groove next to the pin that holds the shaft caught my eye. I verified with an image from FRSport of a CAS.

I haven't disassembled the CAS to see if this was done on purpose or due to wear and tear. I know how frustrating this issue can be, so hopefully this helps someone.
