I love seeing folks do things different and out of the norm from what every one else is doing... and for that reason, I'm waiting with my popcorn

but carputers are a bit problematic for a number of reasons, in any case... love the custom idea and can't wait to see the final product!!!

I'm with Doc, carputers can be quite difficult. However, I have seen some that were done right, and the end result was amazing. Looking forward to your updates!

I saw one when I was at the local Apple store, installed in a new G37 S powered by a Mac Mini, the guy had AT&T 3G and his car was a Wi-Fi Hot Spot for my iPhone

so not worth it to get SSD for a carputer. 1TB HDD drives are like 80$ now and SSD isn't all what its cracked up to be yet.

a small SSD for boot partition paired to a big HDD for storage, now we're talking

Alright guys here is the computer.....

Specs:

*mo-co-so.com 4th Gen Mini ITX Case

*Intel D945GCLF2D Mini-iTX motherboard (On-board Intel Atom 330 1.6Ghz Dual Core processor , Intel integrated graphics and Realtek audio)

*1GB of cheapo Corsair Ram

*320Gb Seagate 2.5inch HDD

*M2-ATX 160 Watt DC-DC car power supply

*mo-co-so.com Lilliput EBY-701 Daylight Readable Touch Panel Monitor

*BU-353 GPS receiver

*generic Bluetooth dongle

Video:

Working on the PC was fun because it was so small and the object was to fit everything inside the case as neatly as possible. That open slot in the front is for a PCI card (I will eventually be putting in a sound card). I used the OEM dash kit to put the LCD in, I will be doing what another member did on here before and carve down matching plastic to fit in the gaps.....

I don't think I should have any problems with the HDD since the case came with little rubber bumpers for mounting in the case...

Right now I just have the basics, I will later be putting in:

-Wi-Fi-backup camera-Mic setup so I can use the bluetooth-OBDII interface

Right now the power supply turns the PC on and off with ignition, so I am installing a DPDT switch that will allow me to have the PC turn on/off normally; not come on at all (if I am just moving the car); and an option to leave the PC on (running in the store real quick)

I bought everything from online stores that specialize in Car-PC stuff and built it myself.....

Most parts that were not normal computer parts were bought from:

mo-co-so.comandmp3car.com

other things like ram, mobo, and hdd were bought from newegg

It takes about 15-20 seconds to start up (hibernation), It seems pretty quick, its up by the time I get out of the driveway.

say you have it in 1st position and using while driving or whatever. then you take a pit stop and want to shut off your car. when you move it from 1st to 3rd position, will the computer stay on or will it cycle on/off/on as you pass through the 2nd position.
