I almost got sucked into a tornado near that plaza in Brooklyn. There's a tennis club there, and there used to be a Roy Rogers, K-Mart and Modell's there.
It wasn't more than an F1, but I was a little kid in the early 90s. My Dad and I went to the Toys R Us there. I remember watching a lot of TV about tornados (thanks Discovery Channel). I remembered that green skies usually spelled trouble. As my dad I at the checkout line, paying for an erector set I begged him to buy, I said "Dad, the sky is green! I think there's going to be a tornado." He ignored me.
When we got outside, there was debris flying and hail. I lost my jacket and my hat, while we were running around trying to find our car. Behind the Modell's (I think it's the Best Buy now) there was a funnel cloud which made it's way off the water to a power plant. I don't think it sustained too much damage.
Last I remember, the Verazano was $11. And they kept jacking up the price every year. How much is it now?
