I am interested in getting a 2010 Rogue SL AWD. My question is in regards to the cargo area. I use those Home Depot green yard barrels. I think they are 50gal barrels. Would one or two of these fit in the cargo area with the back seat folded down?

Hi Rippin... Well... my first reaction would be to tell you to find some other yard barrels if the ones you have won't fit. Not buying a Rogue just because your existing yard barrels won't fit would be like not buying the perfect house just because your coffee pot wouldn't fit on the counter under the cabinets. In other words you could always buy different size yard barrels that would fit. Then again... if you have dozens of these green Home Depot yard barrels and you are simply looking for an inexpensive vehicle for a landscaping or delivery business then the Rogue might not be the answer.

Short answer to your question, will two of them fit? Yes and No.Yes... if they are laying down]No... If you want them standing up.

Actually its hard to answer the question without knowing the specific HD barrels you purchased. They carry an assortment. I have one of the Home Depot barrels. Although it looks to be 50 gal I'm pretty sure its actually 60 gal. My barrel "would not" fit in my Rogue unless I laid it down.

Try this.... the Rogues cargo area from the floor to the top opening of the hatch opening is a hair over 28 inches. If your barrels are taller than that then they won't fit standing up. Two barrels laying down side by side... no problem. My barrel slides right in. The width of the opening is around 33 inches at the bottom (narrowest point) to around 44 inches at its widest.

Hope this helps. The Rogue is a sweet crossover vehicle. I love mine!

Thanks for feedback, Elton Norway.

No I am not basing my decision solely on whether the barrels fit or not. However it is an important decision. I use these barrels for yard work. We have a dump center that we dispose of all grass, leaves and other brush. I own a few of these barrels, so I don't want to have to buy more barrels.

I think you are right and they are 60 gal barrels. Thanks for the measurements. I will take the dimension of the barrel and see if they will fit or not. I would ok with just one of the barrels fitting in standing up.

The two vehicles I have narrowed it down to are 2010 Nissan Rogue SL AWD and a 2010 Subaru Forrester X Premium. Glad to hear you like your Rogue!

Get the Rogue and then if the barrels don't fit you'll have a good excuse to get a hitch and small trailer

Yeah I plan on getting a hitch and trailer with which ever vehicle I get. I was just trying to avoid having to always tow the trailer every time I need to dump the brush.

My personal opinion on the matter is that if rear cargo space is an important issue, then you may want to consider some of the other options in the same category such as the RAV4 or Subaru Forrester. If you will occasionally tow, the RAV4 V6 seems to have had rave reviews.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Rogue. Where the Rgoue shines, IMO, is the excellent car-like drive, great mileage, and nice roomy interior. Also, like many here, i absolutely love the design.

However, the rear cargo is definitely not a strong point. The cargo space is smaller than much of the competitors, plus the rear hatch is small, meaning loading and unloading those barrels could be more troublesome. Another thing to consider is that the Rogue, by design, has a very smooth and curvy front facade that is completely painted, in which paint chips would be highly conspicuous. If you are going to be doing driving in rough roads, you may want to consider the SUVs with black unpainted bumper regions - Although most of the newer SUV designs seem to shun that. Wonder why that is. I was actually wondering, if my Rogue ends up needing front bumper replacement, how it would look with an unpainted front bumper/ fascia. It may actually look pretty cool if it was black.

Thanks for your input.

The other vehicle I am considering is a 2010 Subaru Forrester X Premium. I would have considered a RAV4, but I cannot stand how the rear door opens. A quick story, a buddy of mine has a RAV4. When he parked the car, the person behind them had parked a little too close. When my buddy went back to car because he forgot something for his kid, he had to pull forward just to open the rear door, then move it back into the parking spot. PITA!

I did consider a Honda CRV, but I not thrilled with the styling of it. They did just do a "refresh" of it, but still cannot get over the styling.

I like the Rogue and what it has to offer. I do not want a full size SUV or a truck. I want something that has cargo room and gets decent gas mileage. So right now my list consists of only two SUVs:

As far as the Forester, I would wait next year to get their new CVT transmission or new 6 manual as they are starting offering on the new Legacy: Their current 4 automatic or 5 manual transmissions are lame.

I don't want to move you away from the Rogue as I love this vehicle, but if you want more cargo space, you can look at the Mitsubishi Outlander:Same CVT as the Rogue, possibility of having a V6 engine if you want (with a lame automatic transmission as I remember), and a cargo door which opens in two parts lowering the height to charge stuff in it .

Yeah I looked long and hard at the Mits Outlander and the thing I liked the most was that back cargo area with the tailgate, also Mitsubishi has THE BEST warrany bar none, 10 year powertrain and I think 6 year bumper to bumper, nobody can touch that. The thing I didn't like was the poor gas mileage, everything else was good, I guess it just just didn't resonate with me like the Rogue did for some reason. Another good thing is there aren't that many around, so you'd have a unique vehicle, unlike the RAV and CRV which are sold by the millions (Forester is pretty rare too, but the new powertrain mentioned above sounds like it's worth the wait).

The Outlander was one of the vehicles I sat in during a lunch break. Although I did not have time to test drive it, I just did not feel comfortable in it. Also, I did not like how the interior was laid out and the gas mileage.

I couldn't have said it better. Where the Rogue shines is in its handling. I've had plenty of cars, trucks, SUV's and vans over the years and what continues to amaze me is when I get in the Rogue I feel like I'm getting into an SUV... but it drives like a family sedan. From a "handling perspective" my brother in-law took it for a test drive and made the comment he couldn't tell a difference between driving my Rogue and his Ford Taurus. I felt the same way when I drove it. It doesn't drive or feel like a Truck or an SUV... it handles like a car! My wife says the Rogue is her favorite car of all the cars she has every owned. And thats saying something.

However... cargo handling is not its strong suit. To give you and idea here's a shot of Pescakl1's Outlander next to the Rogue.

Whats nice is the cargo bay is "high" so you don't have to bend over to place something down on the floor of the cargo area like you do in some verhicles. Also there's no tailgate in the way. The downside is the height of the opening severly restricts incoming cargo height. If the object cannot be laid on its side (like a trash can full of yard debris)... your out of luck.
