Travel Wes. Get out and see things for a while. Visit another country, and see how lucky we are here in this country. Seriously, get out and see things before you shop up. It's the best possible thing you could do to appreciate what you can get. It will make you "grow up" in a maturing kind of way. Like guys that join the service and see a foriegn country at 18 and 19, Crash course in Thank God and God bless America, the true meaning....

Just an idea anyway......

I agree, travelling is the best thing. (I wish I'd done more...)

If that makes you/your parents too nervous, apply for college, get accepted, and then defer your admission for a year. Then you'll feel like you have a plan, but you'll have some time to see the world first.

It's like the story about the guy on his deathbed never saying he wished he'd spent more time at the office. Take it from all us "old farts." (Even that expression dates me.) Travel and see the world while you can. You can only benefit from the experience.

I always thought that college should teach one how to think creatively. Master all you can in your senior year (don't be a blow off for the proms and parties), and go to the best college that will accept you (low number of students per professor).

Many colleges have excellent summer programs abroad. If you fail or get lost, a year of working to support yourself living independently without any outside help will quickly bring focus to your life.

Traveling around the US -- or Europe or Asia -- is not economically feasible for the average 18 year old.

I say focus on college first (and finish in 4 years). Remember that college is not a vocational school; it's about learning how to learn. You will graduate from college with few marketable skills --but you will be able to learn faster and be more creative. A college eduation is for YOU, not your employer.

The automotive business is not very lucrative unless you own a dealership or large repair shop (and that takes a major investment).

I don’t think that’s the right attitude to take when traveling abroad. That would only make sense if you were traveling to a 3rd would country. Don’t get me wrong, I love the good old US of A, but there are a lot of counties out there with a lot to offer. To list off a few places I’ve been, Japan is filled with very honorable people. Crime is almost non existent there. You can walk the streets at night there and not worry. There are areas in Manhattan that I wouldn’t be caught dead in. Two years ago, we went to Italy and France. The food was to die for, especially in Italy. And yes, I’m about to bust the myth that the French are rude to Americans. My wife and I were driving in the rain, looking for one of our hotels. We stopped to call the hotel on a public phone and it turns out that you have to use a phone card and you can’t use coin. A French guy that spook English stopped to make the call with his card, spoke to the guy, got directions, and had us follow him in his car to the place. The hotel was about half hour away from where we were. We would have never found the place if it weren’t for him. Last but not least, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been was Ireland. If I hit the lotto, I would move out there in a heartbeat. If you do travel, don’t take the attitude of seeing how much better off you are than the rest of world, instead embrace the differences and learn about all these cultures you’ve never experienced.

Next year Australia and New Zealand! I can’t wait!

The traveling advice is great. I agree with someone earlier who said that you may want to do college first and then travel. That way you can save up a little money to travel with while maybe working a part-time job in college and then check out the world. I know that many companys like diverse employees. Having traveled after college you continue to gain knowledge and diversify yourself and grow a little in the process. That would make you a very marketable person and give some advantages of maturity and growth that some coming directly from college may not have. If I had it to do over again, that is probably what I would have done, but I was working towards a career full-time while going to school full-time, so I was never given the opportunity unless I wanted to start the career search over again and restart my life, which I was not into.

If you are really interested in starting your own import/exotic car shop, then maybe you should look into business management and marketing. Speak with some of our vendors and see how the came into setting up their own shops. It takes some time and money, but if it is your passion, maybe that is the way to go.
