Hi All New I'm New Here
just picked up a 1984 Nissan 720 4x4 KingCab w/ Z24
bought it off an older man who had owned it since '86. Everything is pretty much stock, its got 172,000 miles on it and body is in amazing shape for a truck.
I'll try and get a digital camera together and take some pictures at some point.

I searched all over these forums for the answer to this question but didn't find it, so here it goes:

I'm pretty sure I have a Needle and Seat Valve (or maybe its called needle and float) that gets stuck closed sometimes and the thing wont start. If I tap the carburetor lightly with the back of a screwdriver it starts right up. Its happened twice now.

I went to Napa to get a Carburetor Rebuild kit but I need to know the make and model of the carb.
I'm new to working on cars and trucks so I'm wondering if anyone knows what the stock carb was on these things or could possibly point me to the right direction in finding the model number, I looked all over the carburetor and couldn't find it. Do I need to take it out?

my truck does have AC if that makes a difference.

also wondering what peoples experiences are with these stock carbs? would be more worth it to put a weber in? (if so which one) Over all my truck runs great, its got power and seems to be getting around 17-19mpg (would be nice to get more), and its pretty damn quite.

kongen, you should be getting a LOT more than 13mpg outta that truck, especially a 2wd. My 81' 2.2L will do 25mpg all day and it's not even running real well.

As far as the original carb question goes I'd be highly tempted to go with a new or used weber carb, it seems to be what all the cool kids are doing these days. Personally, my stock carb is doing alright so I haven't done it myself but there are a number of people on the forum who are quite happy after doing the swap. The original carburetors on these trucks are made by Hitachi and are sort of notorious for being kind of mediocre. As for actual model numbers, looking through my book it seems to be kind of a grab bag, looks like they're all DCR342-##, the ## corresponding to sub-models whether its a california emissions or not, whether it has air conditioning or not, whether it's a 2wd truck, a heavy duty model, or a 4wd truck, and whether it's a manual transmission or an automatic.

I can only be real specific for the year of factory service manual I have (1981) but I'd suggest looking around on the body of the carb itself for a model number that matches that sort of naming convention if you're dead set on rebuilding it, or if you have an extra couple hundred bucks kicking around going after the weber to have something simpler and more reliable.

edit: Also, they may or may not have completely changed what model of carb they used between 1981 and 1984, but I'm pretty sure they were still hitachis.

thanks for the replies. yeah i guess I'll just have to keep looking on the carb and see what i can find. just didn't want to tear it all apart before getting the rebuild kit.
definitely considering a weber but we shall see.

@captainzers nice to see the cascadian flag, don;t see it too often. i'm down in south-western oregon.

thanks again

Ditto on getting MUCH better mileage! I average 28 in the city in stop and go traffic! In the summer with the A/C on full blast the entire drive in stop and go traffic, I get 26!

If you have the resources to get a weber, I would go for it. You'll get better gas mileage, idle better, etc...

Welcome, lets see some pics!

Nice, nice. I see used weber carbs around here fairly often too, so if you're on a tight budget and can't find a rebuild kit you might consider trying to find a used weber and a maybe a rebuild kit for it for around half the price of a new weber. Alternatively, there are enough of these trucks around Oregon you might be able to find a decent-ish original hitachi carb from somebody who did the weber swap in the vicinity of supercheap or free.

I always blast through craigslist and every once in a while you'll see stuff like "Weber carburetor off of a 4 cylinder little truck motor. $100 bucks".

And nice to see somebody who knows what my pic is :bigthumb:

as long as its a 32/36 with a mild tune yes...

for the new guy, don't forget to look at our weber carb thread we have going! i run the 38 DGES with no emissions controls and an aggressive tune. i only get 18mpg and my truck weighs sub 2000 lbs.

welcome!
