If you're looking for the look, what you can do is purchase some "carbon fiber" weave that has a peel & apply adhesive backing. I would remove the fabric from the OEM cover, clean it, and apply.

Making real composite structure requires quite a bit of time and $ investment, even with the availability of pre-fabricated carbon fiber composite sheets.

I looked into it and you can get a carbon fiber making kit for 60-100 dollars, probably the lower end quality of carbon fiber. But you would have to shave the piece, and then make a mold. I know the carbon fiber film you're talking about, and its deceiving on hard materials but i think it would just be tacky on that flimsy piece. Ideally I would make the mold and then find a way to extend the back of it for the 2-3 inch gap where the velcro things go. Maybe someday I will try it or just wait to buy the real thing(if its ever produced)
