Carb vs. fuel injection

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

I am getting ready to start my LS1 project. I have a chance to get an LS1 at a decent price, but the FI will not be included. I know that the LS1 can also be carbureted, and was thinking about it as an option. I know it is a lot cheaper to set up. I was wondering what the positives and negatives to a carb vs FI setup would be. Also, will a carb setup fit in an S14 with an LS1? How much gas mileage do you think I will lose?

carb setups can make some power compared to the stock intake manifold as well........

plus its easier to run bigger cam without the computer trying to make an idle

a lot of people like the TPI/LT/LS series because of the fuel injection and making it run good, I will admit they give better fuel economy, but I've driven some older v8 cars with nice working carbs when they are setup right..... running BIG cams too... when I say big I mean like .575 lift

I think it would be badass, and your right it will be so simple to install.....

I think GM performance parts makes an intake manifold..... hell I think they even sell a crate LS1 with a carb too......... they also sell the stuff to get it working with the carb... like ignition etc....

if you can get a deal on it cause its missing the intake manifold or such... JUMP on it

also hood clearance will depend on the intake manifold heigth...

if there are more then one intake manifolds with a 4bbl pattern to LS1 head patterns, I would compare the heights....

I've also though of trying to buy a cheap 4.8 or such truck engine and carb swap it/LS6 heads/big cam and rev the piss out of it for prolly the price of a stock LS-1......

just some other options to chose if that LS1 chance falls through..

carbed ls1s get about the same fuel efficiency as the fuel injection.

carbed engines are a ton easier to swap!

and you dont have to worry about bigger fuel pump bla bla bla... just a fuel pressure regulator and done with that.

if hood clearance is an issue... put a cowl hood on it! i think it would look cool, and you can get someone to make you a fiberglass hood for about what it costs to buy one regular anyway. my friend got a hood made once for 400 or something like that.

How much do you think it would be to add fuel injection?

If the engine doesn't come with the FI setup, run a carb. Edelbrock sells an intake with the MSD box you need to make it run. You'll probably want the harness out of whatever the LS1 donor is as well. My $.02? Run a BG Demon carb. Super easy to tune and make a ton of power. Crisp response too. If you want to go FI, though, start with a complete engine! I've done some carb to FI swaps and piecing stuff together is a headache you don't want. Have you thought about an LQx engine? The truck stuff only weighs about 80lbs more than the LSx series motors. If I were to do the swap (and I'm looking for a chassis at the moment to do just that) I would start with the LQ9 motor, which is the 345hp 6.0L out of the big trucks and the Escalade. Swap to the new L92 head (screaming cheap from GMPP) and run the new 6.2L intake as well. With a mild cam, tune and headers you should see about 480hp. To the wheels. Cost-wise, I've seen complete LQ9's and trannies (mostly auto) with harness go in the $2800-3500 range depending on milage. Just the motor would be less, natch. Get a T-56 out of a Dodge pruduct. (better torque rating than the GM box, I believe) and run it with an LS7 clutch and you're in business.

if you run it carbuerated you wont need the wiring harness.

id use a proform carb or a holley carb.

proform carbs dont have chokes in them... can be a pain in the winter. go holley if you need a choke.
