Hey guys, im not really up to date with 350z FI setups ect... been like 2 years since i was into it, and now that ive officially chosen to force my dad into giving me his, (6months to 10months from now ill have it as only my car he deserves a new 350z, nismo at that!) i hope to start FI preperations. Now i dont know too much about The VH engine (vh is right isnt it?) but ive heard its good with boost!??? So i was wondering what is it that makes it better(1)? And what is wrong with the VQ so it cant handle the boost (remember its been 2 years and i have done searching, and there are somany vague/hints/bstheories that i dont kno squat, and remember 2 years ago the accepted idea was the O-ring breaking under boost)(2)? I have this theory that you might be able to get some nissan replacments for the VH and swap them in the VQ, maybe even being cheap or even JDM VH parts(3)?I have high hopes (im gonna get those damnd fast 997 TTs!!!!) with very high reliablity (scramble boost enabled to higher psi for runs and then low boost for daily commutes) but CARB legality is a big pain... So my other question(4) is about forged pistons (or whatever is keeping a VQ in low boost settings, i dont/wont need more than 500hp/tq max for a few runs a day or maybe week... i just cant afford blowing money in my car on gass too much ) being carb legal... i know there is no way to detect it in visual inspection, but might the ecu squeal/rat me out, and could i pass smog(5)? Remember im from the past with knowlege and im in the position where i dunno who to believe... Avoid Flaming please and dont call me a noob, ive spent more hours in a 350z than youve most likely... (several trips across country ny ny, all over cali to corpus cristi a few times, oregon, idaho, florida 2x....)

I have no idea about carb legality as it doesn't effect me, and FI= fuel injection? your context implies otherwise

anyhow, the VQ has way more aftermarket support than the VH and you get a 6 speed! the VH comes only with an auto and you have to adapt it to fit a manual gearbox, as for boost, the stock VQ can handle enough boost to get you north of 400 whp and I believe that would be with 50 state legal kits, beyond that you can upgrade to forged pistons and rods to make even more power and you can even get an aftermarket sleaved block for absolutely insane amounts of power, stick with the VQ and you'll save money and have a much easier project

Sorry that whole op came out wrong! i was just a tiny bit Ok no i ment like the new vq swapping out parts like rods ect into the older vq. u kno like the new one that has the twin intake and weird hood vs the old 2004 z?I read that the new 2007 z is probably very similar to the gtrs upcoming engin and that it handles boost well. So i thought why not buy replacment parts to strengthn the older 2004 VQ?Suggestions?

with custom forged pistons, which are cheaper than a lot of the off the shelf forged pistons you can run whatever compression ratio you want making it as friendly as you like for lots of boost, just a matter of figuring otu where you want to go, if 400 whp is your goal then an off the shefl kit will get you there, if you want a 1000 hp beast then you're gonna need an aftermarket block and forged internals, as for swapping parts with the new vq35hr, the hears are different and of course the intake, I personally see no reason to swap parts to the vq35de, most of the gain is still gonna come from big turbo(s) and forged internals to take the abuse

yeah but i thought that using the new vq parts in it would avoid any smog problems... well i guess that as long as i run stock comp they cant tell (unless its bored and stroked)also budget is obviously a problem... but i remember the day the 4.2l kit came out... it was cool to see till i saw the price tag lmao... go ahead and let this thread die out... im still considering the 240sx w/ legal swap out... if i have any more z33 fi questions ill be sure to ask...ty for your help anyway!
