1994 Infiniti Q45........When I went to start my car today, it would not start. The car is not turning over and the battery is a new battery. When I turn the key the car just makes a whistling noise, it's like the starter is not getting power. What could this be, a bad starter or a bad starter seleloid??????? Any help is appreciated.......

Thanks in advanceRickey

check the load with a voltmeter to see if you have an alternator failure. Sounds like it.

I also hooked up a Battery starter/charger to the car to see it was indeed the alternator, but the whinning/buzzing/humming was still there. If it was the alternator, wouldn't the car still turn over while the battery starter/charger is hooked up??? The car was fine all day yesterday but this morning is when all this started. Thanks Rickey

Can you tap the starter with a mallet or hammer?

That was my next option just to make sure if the starter was bad. While investigating where the buzzing was coming from I noticed that it was coming from the trunk by the gas tank and that has led me to believe that it might be the fuel pump. I have a full tank of gas so I know that it can't be that. Because of this buzzing sound, the car is not turning over, how do I diagnose if it is the fuel pump? What should I look for as other possible causes?

ThanksRickey

Check all the fuses. That buzzing sounds liek it might be your fuel pump. That shouldn't stop the car from turning over.

I checked all the fuses and all is good. It was raining very hard in the past couple of days, when I was driving the car can water get anywhere under the car to short something off? What else can/should I check for?

Is your under engine wind tray installed?

It almost sounds to me, if the starter isnt going at all, like the neutral safety switch is bad or something? Try shifting into neutral and see if it does it?

Thanks for the quick replies!!!The undertray is installed. One of the first things I did was put the shifter into the neutral position and try to start the car, but was unsuccessful. To me the starter is not getting any power or it is shot. What exactly is the "neutral safety switch", where is that located, and how to I check to see if it needs to be replaced? My next option is to take out the starter and take it to Autozone to get it checked. What else should/can I check for?

did you replace the starter relay [blue]?there's a recent thread in online mechanic by rpayton. turns out his was not the relay, but the relay is sure cheaper than a starter, and they do fail!.

Theres a relay and a solenoid in regards to the starter so if the relay is bad you may not hear any clicking.....

I think theyre like $15 from Joe and if it doesnt fix it, you have a spare!!

It can still click and be bad, swap another in and try. See if voltage gets to the solenoid.

Q45Tech says normal wear and tear item, not if but when.

I just ordered the starter relay (Blue one next to ABS module, on the passenger side by the firewall) and the alarm relays from Joe. Waiting on it to come in.

I know that the alarm relay is located on the passenger side, but where exactly is that relay located. Can you pinpoint me in the right direction????

Worse case scenario, how do I remove the starter??? It seems like no tool can fit to remove the bolts.

UPDATE...................I finally received my relays from Joe after waiting roughly 2 weeks, (they were out of stock). I installed them on the car and the car still would not start. I guess I will have to drop the started and take it in to get tested. I will do that this weekend and post the results.

Thanks all...........

Darn! Well having a spare beats waitng two weeks.

Why don't you test the current at the starter before you drop it? Did you eliminate the starter solenoid?

FINALLY...............I found the root of the problem, it was the starter. I dropped the starter and replaced with a new one and the car fired right up. Thanks to everyone that helped me out.
