So I've basically have gotten over the fact that I'm bound to get 20-22mpg in my versa.. But this morning I was semi-late to work so I jumped in it and backed it out of my drive way. Put it in drive after coming to a stop in backing up. And push the gas peddle and to my surprise the car was barely moving forward at all.. I almost had it floored before I got it up the hill.. Then magically it started working again.. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?.. I'm probably going to take it to the shop..

Also its a cvt..

what was the temp. this morning? I know with my CVT that if the temperature is below 45 degrees F it take a little while for the car to get moving but once tepms build in the cvt fluid all is ok.

Why is your mpg that low? I don't think I could get mime that low if I tried... Is there an issue?

Sounds like the transmission was cold. My CVT acts a bit sluggish causing the engine to rev a little higher than normal (in the 2700-3300 rpm range when normally it should be 2200-2500 rpm) until it warms up.

Mine wouldn't get over 22 MPG until it had over 500 miles on it. 500-1500 miles and it would get 23-34 MPG. Now there's almost 7300 miles on it and it won't get more than 25 in town and 27.5 on the highway. Had Nissan service check it out yesterday and all readings are normal. Nothing they can do unless they run a fuel economy test, which would require them to fill the tank, run it to empty, and record the results (all at my expense) to try and find a problem.

It was 70's this morning.. And no I didn't brake hard while backing up.. I did like I normally do every morning except waking up at the right time.. This was the first time I've ever had it happen. It was like when you have a clutch in your car and your just barely letting it catch like it was slipping bad or something..

In your angst to get to work could your foot have been pressing down on the brake as well? Without you really realizing? Been there, done that.

I'm fairly certain I wasn't pushing the brake because car was up to 5500 rpms by the time i made it up the hill.. Truthfully the only reason i noticed was because i heard the engine reving and i looked down at the tach and it was that high and i looked at the shifter to make sure i wasn't stupid and it was in drive.. I dunno.. didn't do it to me this morning so hopefully it was just a fluke of sorts.. Hope it doesn't do that to me on the road somewhere though..

Fuel pump issue? not likely. The fuel pump bone is not connected to the transmission bone. You need to get that thing to the dealer; your low fuel mileage is NOT normal, and is likely caused by a failing (defective) CVT transmission. The low fuel mileage reinforces this hypothesis. These JATCO CVT transmissions have proven themselves to be quite reliable, but there will be a few bad units out there (like with any car). You should be getting 26+ MPG on a brand-new versa w/ CVT, and as the vehicle breaks in, you should plateau at around 30 mpg city (+/-). If your car is still under warranty, get that thing to a dealer. My transmission has worked flawlessly for over 45,000 miles, and I live in the frigid mountains of NH. The CVT will have a slight delay upon engaging; this is perfectly normal. The delay should be no more than a second on the coldest mornings. Always wait until you feel it "engage" before depressing the accelerator, this will prevent damage to the belt and variable pulleys. Best of luck, and do not get discouraged.
