hey guys i went to go start my car today and it wont start like 9 times out of 10 but when it does start it runs super rough and wont rev over 2500 and it also won't idle either it just stalls out when i try to rev it over 2500 it just bounces like a rev limiter so i have no idea whats going on but if anyone can help me or give me suggestions i'd appreciate it. btw it may be due to plugs and wires cuz my wires are pretty much stuck to the plugs and will not come off.

When the MAF is bad it will go into safe mode, won't rev past 2,500. Most likely your's is bad or the wiring to it is messed up.

how would i check it to see if it's bad i mean i can look at the wires 2 see if there crappy but how do i check the maf. do you mean check for voltage? and if it is in safe mode will it automatically get out or do i have to do sometihng to get it out of safe mode?

It will get out of safe mode when whatever is wrong is corrected.

Easiest way is to borrow another MAF and swap them.

WOW do i feel stupid i just went to look at the wiring for my MAF and the harness with the IAT and MAF has a chunk missing out of it from where the fan hit it. so i'm assuming this is my problem. and on that note does anyone have a spare i could buy? or if you know where i can get one?

hit your local pick a part yard (pull-a-part.com) or you could try car-part.com, or you could post in the WTB section. i may actually have a sohc maf but i would have to dig it out of my garage. the wires you could just solder back together as they are part of the engine harness. chances are tho your maf is fine its jut the wires.

no i know its the just the wires cuz the maf looks brand new can i just crimp connect them together cuz i dont have solder or a gun so it'll be a quick easy fix. plus i checked my local pull and pay spots and they only have 240 shells no motors or trans.(i live in orlando)

ok now what do i do i crimp connected it together and the car ran but it's misfiring like crazy now so i took it apart and soldered the wires back together and it's still doing the same crap does anyone have any ideas as to whats going on with the car.

i drove it home 100 miles no problem and then the fan cut the maf harness. the only things i replaced were fuel filter, plugs and wires, so i thought that rewiring the maf should have made it run better but now i have no idea whats going on pleaseee help

try pulling wires off and see if you can see which cylinder is missing. There is a chance you closed the gap on the plug installing it. that would make it misfire and run like crap.

true i could try that, but another thing that concerns me is that my instructor at uti told me to unhook my battery for about a half hour to reset the pcm's adaptive strategy and i did but when i went to go restart the car it didnt start the first few tries and my tach or speedo didnt work either they just stayed flat, they eventually started working and when i got the car running it was still missing pretty bad, needless to say im pretty frustrated at this point and if anyone can help me out it'd be very much appreciated.

also since i replaced the spark plugs i pulled the new ones out and 2 or 3 of them seemed to be black with carbon (not oil) and the rest were clean so i'm thinking this could be an indicator of my misfire and since i replaced the wires already i dont think they could be the problem, coult it be my cap and rotor?

yeah everything is stock except new fuel filter plugs and wires. but it doesnt make sense to me since i drove the car home over 100 miles with no problem and the only thing thts happened to the car is the maf wiring being cut and i repaired that so i figured the car would run normally again. but its not it's misfiring and has almost no power when driven.

Really clean your plugs since they were being ran with the messed up MAFS...or get new ones. Double check to make sure your plug wires are in the correct order and might as well check the voltage of the MAFS just to rule that out too.

It could...but it would be weird that all these problems came all at once. I would start with the things you have messed with first instead of looking for other problems. Also, you can pull the codes from the ECM which will tell you if you have or had other problems as well as resetting them if they are gone.

well my misfire went away and i checked out the distributor cap and rotor and there was some white almost corrosion like stuff on the points so im not sure if thats good or bad but i tried scraping alot of it off with my fingernail and it looks like its stained on there it also kinda looks like the rotor cut into the points. the rotor also had the white corrosion substance on it so im not sure what this is from but i'll probably be getting a new cap and rotor in the future just in case since it is cheap enough.

does anyone know what that corrosion could be and if it's normal or not?
