Hello all. I'm new here and i need help with my new 240 :) . Here's the run down. I put new wires and plugs on and took the MAF off and cleaned it a day ago. I also installed a new thermostat. Just doing a much need tune up on her and it happened. I go to start the car in the morning and she start up and just die right after. So i start her up and put some gas to her and she died right when i left off the gas. So i start her up and rev her up to 2500 and when i tried to go up to 3000 she would go up and drop back down to 2000 and kept on doing it over and over so i let off the gas and she dies. I checked to make sure the firing order was right (it was) and i unhooked the MAF and still did the same thing. I'm new to 240sx (only had the car a month) and could use some help if yall might know what it is. Thanks for any advice

Sounds like the MAF is bad now. What did you clean it with? Hook it back up correctly?

I just cleaned it with some MAF cleaner from autozone. Yes it was hooked back correctly. Not that hard just 4 bolts and 2 terminals.

I'm with biggie, sounds like you should try a different MAF as the first troubleshooting part replacement. Got any friends with 240's you could borrow one from?

Test the maf before spending money. Check the fsm for exact procedure. Sometimes part places don't take back electronic parts.

the same thing happened to me bro i didnt do a tune up i forget what i did but the wiring on the maf was literally backwards check to make sure u didnt somehow switch ur wires or maybe one came loose if that seems ok check the voltage going to the maf could be a bad ground especially since u said it did the same thing when u unplugged it....def def sounds like a wiring problem

ok, so i did a voltage check and i'm getting source voltage to the sensor. Checked wires and all are good going to maf. I looked up to see about maybe testing the maf on Alldata and really didn't find it. Sooo....i guess i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and buy one and hope its the problem lol.

FYI mafs are very sensitive... I bet whatever you cleaned it with left a film on it. The only thing you can use is MAF cleaner

Correct me if im wrong, but when the car is cold it starts in open loop mode, so really it is not utilizing the MAF until it hits operating temp? so it couldn't be a bad sensor and also would it not shoot a code??

Open loop always reads cts, tps and maf. Closed loop reads all sensors.

I've only replaced plugs, plug wires, maf, and thermostat. Would you happen to know what the specs are on the coil? I can break my ohm meter out and check it.

I dont know if this helps you
did you check you cap and rotor, vacuum lines, clean throttle body all those things can cause rough idling and hard starts i would start with stuff like that before you go out and buy things
