I havent had much luck on other forums so maybe somebody here can help. ok for starters i have a 89 240 hatch with a rb20det in it. i purchased the car in the middle of the swap and pretty much all that was done when i got the car was:

-motor dropped in-partially wired

I have finished pratically everything else but i am still having problems in the wiring department. The problem i have now is that i get no spark but theres a few complications that make this problem a little more difficult. Here is what i have done so far

-tested the coil pack side of the ignitor chip and got minimal voltages nothing even close to 9.5v or what the exact voltage is-probbed pins 1-3 and 11-13 on the ecu

The complication is that while i was probbing the pins on the ecu, i would try to start the car to see if i could get any readings. While i was doing this i was probbing pin 13 on the car and it suddenly started. It didnt run good ( i have other problems besides not getting spark ) but it started. Once i take the probe out, the car will either die right away or soon afterwards. Usually it wont start up again for a long time even if pin 13 is probbed. So i guess you see the bad situation i'm in, because i really dont know where the problem lies. I dont know if the ignitor is bad, bad wiring or its a combination of both. I would really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks Brandon

Is the motor grounded? Maybe while probing the probe ground was enough to get the motor to start. I would double check to make sure you have good grounds.

sounds like a bad connection at the ECU between pin 13 on the harness and ECU

ya the wierd part is that it only happens every so often so its not like it will fire up every time with pin 13 grounded. like after a period of rest. i thought maybe it was a coinincidence.also it used to start up almost every time then one day it just kinda ... stopped.

Try checking for a positive voltage source that may be close to a ground. Try checking your fuses, make sure they're all the right amperage. I had a similar problem, never was sure what exactly caused it, but you'll need to pay close attention to what exactly is going on when your car starts/doesn't start.

well today oddly enough the car started with no pin probbing or anything. dunno whats up but i turned it off and started it back up several times. hopefully this will be a continuing trend with my car but who knows i'll try and make sure there are no loose connections. hopefully finishing up everything soon.
