I drove home for lunch today and the car started and ran fine. When I started the car to go back to work, it made a strange sound. I turned if off and try to start it again. Same thing happen. The engine didn't turn over, and it make grinding sounds. I tried to crank the third time and it started rough but it ran fine. I drove to work ok. I did restart it again and it started normal.

So, what do you think wrong with my car?

btw, the weather is 55 degree raining day.

How long was lunch? If you started it cold when you came home and immediately shut it off, it is porbably flooded. Let it rest so you don't hydraulically lock it and damage it.

The ride home is 10 minutes drive. Luch was 25 mintues max.

Next time when it happens, I should wait for sometime before I try again?

A normal start, the car makes three clicking sounds before it start. Is this normal?

Maybe your battery or starter solenoid is failing. Get the battery checked immediately so it soen's take out your alternator also. If it is over two, or especially three, years old, just replace it with the best (highest CC amps) one you can find.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

Just replaced the battery about 6 months ago.

Any suggestion on how to check the starter solenoid?

does the " grinding" sound like when you accidently try to start a car that is already running? if so,it could be the starter and or flywheel has chipped or bent gears,my q has occasionally done this for the last 110,000 miles, dealer "could not duplicate" problem ever during the 70,000 mile warranty,of course after that ran out they could "duplicate" it and said it had a bent or warped flywheel-not sure if i beleive the diagnosis, they never separated transmission from engine to diagnose, but wanted 1200 plus to fix it,at this point,i will wait till i need a new transmission to pay for the labor to correct this issue.with my luck,i would pay to repair this and the transmission would die shortly afterwards or car would get totalled or stolen!mine happens maybe every 1 in 10-20 cranks, frustrating to say the least.

Wow, this sounds bad.The grinding sounds exactly like when you try to start the car that is already running.

I have so many questions now.

This problem is due to the fact that my transmission is bad and not the starter problem?

If I want to get this fix, do I just bring it to the dealer and let them diagnose it?

if the flywheel is bent or warped, Does this affect the car drivability?

no,transmission is not bad,but if they say the flywheel is bad, transmission must be dropped to get to flywheel-why i will wait to possibly replace the flywheel until the transmission does go bad-same labor,do both at same time.hopefully you just have a bad starter, and flywheel is not damaged!

you would think a bent flywheel would affect the engine balance and smoothness,if my flywheel is indeed bent,i have not noticed any symptoms other than the occasional grinding at startup, maybe my flywheel is not bent, just chipped teeth that mesh with the starter, maybe it is perfect, just my starter is bad? who knows, not much confidence in infiniti on this one!car started grinding occasionally at 22,000 miles!now has 133,000 miles, problem never solved.

Yesterday was the first time it made that grinding sound. I have started the car three times since, and it started somewhat normal. However, it seens like it takes a long time (4 clicking sounds instead of 3) before it started.
