After removing the upper and lower timing chain guides, the S14 will not start. This is what I'm getting.

All bolts on the Valve cover and cam cover torqued to spec, new valve gasket and RTV sealant applied. The car was at TDC on the compression stroke, according to the guide I followed.

When everything was put back together, the problem manifested itself. The car will not start at all unless the accelerator is completely pushed through the floor, and even so, it only revs to 4g. When it's idling, the car sounds "lumpier" than usual. The idle note is also louder. Now once idling has been achieved, the "instant" I press the accelerator, there is aloud POP from the exhaust and engine at the same time and the car dies. The pop sounds like a balloon bursting.

On a side note, the engine now sounds like how it did when I first got it. The rattle is gone but a larger problem took it's place.

check your maf. in the first vid it sounds like it just dies when you let off the gas and thats usually contributed to a maf not being plugged in. other then that you might have to take everything back off and re time it

Did you take the timing chain off? It seems like your cam timing is off.

Did you take the distributor out? Less likely (especially if you did not take it out DONT mess with it, it's fine).I'm thinkin the chain might have skipped some teeth on a cam even if you didn't take the gears/chain off.

Nope, didn't take the chain off at all.

Quote »Did you take the distributor out? Less likely (especially if you did not take it out DONT mess with it, it's fine).[/quote]Yep, the distributor was taken off. So I'm thinking the timing is definitely the issue. My problem is I've never worked on any timing issues before.

Going back out now to look at it again.

right tooth? What do you mean?

As for the distributor bolt, the 2 that hold it on to the engine? I made a mark with a sharpie before I took it off and repositioned them where they were when I put it back.

I made sure the #1 cam lobes were pointing outwards and the distributor cap was pointing at the #1 spark plug before I removed anything.

When it was put back, the problem started. I've changed the whole distributor before without any issues.

Oh well, another day. Let's go take a look at it.

Pray for me/wish me luck.

EDIT: Oh, btw If I retard the timing by rotating the distributor counterclockwise, the car sounds worse. Advancing it beyond the original sharpie mark....don't remember what that does. I'll try that in a bit.

Once again ,thanks for the link. I wish I had found and read those before I got started. Those would make a great addition to the Timing chain rattle fix guide on 240sx.org.

I had to leave for work so I had the car brought to my mechanic. On my lunch hour, I went over there and watched his worker fixed it.

2 problem - a) Timing was off - which we knew b) The spark plugs were flooded......more explaining to come.
